5 working days to retirement

After a 36 year career in the IT field, last 20+ as an applications development project manager, it is time to turn in the laptop, hand over the building entry badge and head off into the sunset in that blissful state of retirement.

Poverty is going to kind of stink but more time to shoot, load, cast, play guitar & banjo and snap photographs.

Congrats! I retired last June and am loving it. Just got back from the range with 3 .22's. I had that particular area all to my self, and on a Friday no less You don't have to be rich to enjoy.

Congratulations! You're gonna love it. I had the opportunity to retire at 55, so I grabbed it and never looked back. Don't know what your plans are, but for me it was the ability to pursue a 3rd career as my own boss doing what I wanted, when I wanted.

The secret to a happy retirement is staying busy doing what you love. In my case it was setting up a decent woodshop and creating things for us and others. Make enough money at it to pay for tools and supplies and beer money, which is all I wanted.

I will add this: Don't get sucked into some retirement investment scheme by any of the many "experts" out there. They'll be happy to take your money and screw you out of it.

I've only been retired a little over 3 years, and I think I need to practice a few more years to get this down. I do some real estate business here and there, as I do like wheeling and dealing some. I try to make enough extra money so I can go hunting somewhere. I've bought a few houses for myself and sold a couple, plus some for a few other people. Keeps my mind busy, and I like that part. Probably be inclined to sit around on the computer too much other wise.

Thanks guys. My plan is to spend 6-8 months deciding what I want to do when I grow up. I have 2 flintlock rifles on the bench that need to be built this winter, my photography and playing guitar and banjo to keep me busy. Also, a bunch of lead that needs to be melted and turned into bullets and a bunch of brass, primers and powder that needs to be turned into ammo. Going on a mission trip with my church the first week of December.

Geesh, I may have to go back to work to relax.

I retired 2 years ago. I have a part time job delivering flowers for a friend. At least once a week I hunt or fish. Most of the time that is with Roland. I spend time with my Son and his family (grand kids). Life is good. I walk my property at least once a day. Looking for tracks, seasonal changes in flora and fauna etc. like I did as a child. Enjoy your retirement. That is an order! :mrgreen:

Hopefully you will love retirement. It sounds like you have enough non-work interests to make your days enjoyable. I worked full time for 48 years then retired a bit over three years ago. I worried a bit that I would be bored, but that has not been a problem at all. Absolutely the only thing I miss about my old job is the paycheck every two weeks.

I will qualify to retire in about another 5 or 6 years but I'm not sure if I will be able to or not. I got married & had kids late. My youngest is 4. I may have to hang in longer but I am looking forward to getting out as soon as possible.

You'll find there are only 3 days in a week once you're retired. Saturday, Sunday and Payday...5 1/2 years for me....enjoy.

I retired about 18 months ago people call all the time for carpentry work
I find the time to do the stuff i want and pass on the rest.

Jeff have a great retirement. I retired in 2003 (39 years 9 month service) and have enjoyed every minute. Keep moving and find activities to do. I shoot a lot more now. Good luck.

Thanks so much everyone. I admit it is a bit unnerving to know the monthly paycheck is going to stop. However, the stress of the job was taking its toll. I've been with the same company 36 years and 4 months. I've been a project manager the past 25. As a PM, one spends most of his day asking people to do stuff they don't want to do on a timing they don't want to do it on and then sometimes you have to tell them to do it instead of ask. The daily grind of that stress was starting to get to me. If I enjoy my retirement half as much as you all seem to, I'll be one happy camper.
