480 super redhawk cut back

I missed the first round of 480 alaskans. I have a 480 7.5" I would like to have cut back to a alaskan length. I have seen a few home done but I don't like the sight's they ended up with. Has anyone seen a conversion that used the factory sight arangement on a super redhawk shroud. I have a 454 alaskan and really like it and would like to have the 480 made just like it. The 480 is a great shooting gun but I just want it shorter. I have cut back a few single actions with great results but want the 480 done right and to have the front sight installed like the alaskan comes out from the factory.

glad you want a Alaskan "custom", and I had trouble with my front sight quest too...I went with a dove tail cut and front sight off a midway usa web sight(I think thats were the smith got it).

And I like it alot!

My .02 cents would be to have the smith fill in the scope ring cuts on the frame. That will help "clean up" the over all look.....
I still like Franks .480 custom though!

I have one with Jim Stroh getting the barrel chopped and I asked him about either milling the top to remove the ring cuts or filling them with weld and he did not feel like either was a good idea.

Being one of the premier pistolsmiths, I didn't press him on it, but I sure don't like the look of the cuts on a stubby SRH.

I also want to clarify that I wasn't necessarily referring to your SRH Frank. In general, I don't like the cuts on the chopped ones, but mine will have them as well. You did a great job on yours for sure - looks better than many that I have seen.

I know you didnt mean anything by it, and I see your point...there alot of hack jobs out there.

I let a smith handle mine, since I did "hack" mine up and he had to fix it.

That is a VERY nice revolver!!...(Even with the scope-ring cut-outs...).

Not good at posting pics....but its a 9 1/2" stainless SRH, NOT the target grey model. It matches my .44 mag SRH execpt for the cylinder.

I'll have to pick up another SRH and cut it to ~4". I will just have to remember to keep my ammo seperate so none of the Vaquero loads find their way into the SRH. Also will have to use WLP for the SRH and CCI350's for the Vaquero for added safety.

Are you saying that the SRH is weaker than the Vaquero? That's the first that I've heard that.

I understand that, but that is still the first that I have heard that a SRH wasn't up to at least a SBH or Vaq. I've even read that a SRH may be a tad stronger.

I'd definately say the SRH frame is stronger than the Vaquero. IF the cylinders of both guns are the same diameter then the Vaqueros cylinder would be stronger in my opinion. Simply because theres more meat in the web.

I read it, but it didn't sink in...

I was thinking of the frame strength - I agree that a 5 shot cylinder would be stronger than a 6 shot cylinder. I get it now - use a 2x4 next time.
