.45acp magazine modification

Man, am I hoping...........

Having been a 'Ruger guy' (too much history to list) for decades, I picked up a P97DC last year and dearly love it. Except--- as you all know, the magazines are spendy, and I've heard nothing good about aftermarket replacements.

I read earlier today (on another forum) that standard 1911 magazines can be altered by cutting a proper slot for the magazine catch, and will function in the P-series .45 Rugers.

Has anyone tried this? I'm looking for actual EXPERIENCE, not for opinions or speculation. If so, this would open up a whole new world for us, wouldn't it ??

I've picked up Mec-Gar hi-cap magazines for my son's P89 and don't have any complaints (lots cheaper than factory), but I don't see them in .45acp, sadly.

Pro Mag makes 45 ruger mags. Got a 10 rounder a while back for my P-90. Don't remember having any issues with it. My son has the gun now, but I fear he's never fired a round through it. I modified a Wilson 10rd mag to work in my P-345 back when they first came out. The Ruger mag is just slightly thicker so there is a little wiggle room when the Wilson is put up the chute. It locks the slide back on the last round, so it works. You just have to be sure before you make that cut. The mag latch is a little thicker on the 90 than the 345 and the modified mag would not lock in the 90 very well. I didn't feel like doing any more trimming since they worked fine in the 345. (Note: Midway has 8rd ProMags for $19.99)

Why don't you try it? Just get a cheap 1911 mag and use a Dremmel tool to cut the slot. By the way, Mec-Gar makes the P89 mags and I would assume that their 1911 mags could be retrofitted to the P series guns.
