45 Ruger

Took the 45 out for a while today. May use it come doe season.



Have several hundred 265 Keiths loaded with 8 grains of Unique. This is a 1973 Blackhawk converted to Bisley. Never fired this load in the sixgun so I shot it first at 16 yards offhand. The smaller holes are from a 30-30.


Next I moved back to 40 yards & shot from the bed rail of my truck. Not much of a rest but it is what it is as Miss Barbara says.

Good shooting. That load will push right thru a deer. I load mine back a little with 7.5 grs unique and 250gr LSWC. Kills just as quick as my 30/06 with 165 gr. just not as far.

I can't go slower. It took a very firm hold to keep the hits center. I'll probably bump this load to something like 18 to 20 grains of 2400. This will bring the impact down so maybe I can relax my grip some.

That's some good shooting.
I'd bet that if you were to bump that 8 grn charge of Unique up to about 8.5, it'll get even better.

Thanks guys. I've never shot Bullseye but there's probably guys who can do that without a rest using one hand. I surely could be a better shot but I do have fun.

I always preferred the 45COLT - 260GRSWC Keith style bullets over 9.0GRS of UNIQUE or UNIVERSAL. This load shot very well in ALL my 45COLT siguns and the Cimarron 4 3/4" 45 has almost 7000 of 'em up-the-tube. ALL of my other HTFD's, Uberti's COLT's, Rugers, and S&W 45COLT sixguns shoot this load better than the lighter loads of the same propellents. I also prefer .453" to .454"O.D. bullets in all of those guns.
For a true "Heavy load ' with the same bullets you cannot beat Elmer's old load of 18.5grs of 2400 at 1050-1100fps. It will shoot through any game animal on the NA Continent and you cannot do any better. ALL the heavier loads with 300gr bullets at any speed above 1100 are NOT one whit more effective, they only have a slightly flatter trajectory and lots more useless recoil. ELMER KNEW HIS STUFF !!!

I was thinking on how to word my comments but Wil beat me to it.
For many years I've used my Lyman 454424 bullets cast from WW @ 265grs over 9.0grs Unique. I've found this to be the most consistent load in all the .45 Colts I've tried it in and safe for all in good condition other than original black powder versions.

I also like the 2400 load Wil mentioned. In my opinion a person doesn't need more than that for anything on this continent.

I'm not the great white hunter so don't take this wrong but the largest deer I've killed was a Montana whitetail using my short 45 BH. The load was a 260 Keith with 9 gains of Unique. I too love that load. These were loaded a little lighter for some reason I forget. I'm out of Unique for now so once these are gone I'll probably load them back with 18.5 grains of 2400.

I'm waiting for some 2400 to show up. Hasn't been around in about a year.

Yeah ... but ... whats the point other than than it's much louder, bigger blast, hurts the hand and elbows (arthritis here we come) and scares small children . The deer/bear or paper target is just as dead with a 'lighter' load with a 250-260g bullet at 1000-1100fps.... . Just saying.... Hah!

And if your gonna use 296 you might as well max them out to 26.5gr./27gr. & really flatten them bullets.

Simple...My 7.5" BH groups best at 25.5 grs, and 1340 fps is "enough" .. :wink:

PS: Dittos with a 250 XTP..
