If I loaded a .45 Colt case with a 275 grain bullet and enough 2400 to get 1200 fps velocity, would it still be a .45 Colt?

Or would it be a .45 whatever I wanted to call it? 8)

Lee Martin has driven 275-grain bullets to 1400 FPS using H-110 and calls this a "Ruger only" load . . . nothing more.

But you can call it whatever you like.

;)

Corbon factory loads get up around 1300 FPS with a 300 grain bullet and label it 45 Colt +p. I have some 260 grain cast flatnose with 18 grains of 2400 loaded by a friend and I think the chart has 1180 on those. Several of the factory loads claim like velocities but another forum member, who actually chrono tests them, says all factory loads are not honest representations of the product. However I don't think 1200 FPS is uncommon.

Plenty of manufacturers call it long colt. I do to just out of habit. Really irritates the anal folks. They can call it what they want.

Well I just thought that the old .45Colt/.45 Long Colt discussion needed a little more exposure.

There are those here who claim that because SAAMI refers to this .45 cartridge as a .45 Colt, that that is the only "correct" monicker for the cartridge, but since these loadings greatly exceed the pressure specifications recommended by SAAMI, it is clearly apropos to refer to it as a .45 Long Colt or by any other name that one wishes to apply to this cartridge. 8)

I would call it the ".45 Troll Bait".

Well then, since you took the bait, tell us what you think? 8)

Geez, with a load like that, it'd probably be a loose collection of parts with a busted wrist attached! JMHO, Rod

You should try my big game hunting load, 26.1 grains of H110 behind a 250 @ 1,400+ fps ;-)

Global warming? Not an issue!
Starvation in Africa? Who cares?
US Economy? What problem?
Student loans?
Immigration?
NSA spying?

I certainly hope you didn't lose any sleep over this question.

This is a firearms website.

This is where one comes to ask firearms-related questions.

It's not considered good form to belittle anyone's legitimate question about firearms-related information, particularly in the various "gun forums" here.

There's a "political" forum here and a "lounge" for use in discussing the other weighty issues of the world.

Give the guy a break.

Flame war? You're kidding, right?

So far, it is you who have indulged in name calling (which is your stock in trade) in this thread, not I.

By the way, I have a Blackhawk that says .45 caliber on the side.....are we to conclude that I can shoot any .45 caliber cartridge in it? 8)

I always wondered why it was called a Ruger only load, and not a .45 magnum. Ed
Well, I think it all started with Linebaugh and Seyfried. Linebaugh did most of his high pressure .45 Colt testing with the Ruger .45 Colt revolver. Therefore 'unofficially' Ruger Only Loads. Saying .45 Colt Magnum 'implies' (to me) a SAAMI standard of which there isn't any. Actually the question should be why the .454 wasn't called the .45 Colt Magnum :) .

The 454 is the '45 Magnum'. No need for the Colt moniker that confuses the issue. It's the first cartridge that bypassed the Colt cartridge controversies of loading beyond spec.

Are you for REAL? Give me a break! His question boils down to" If I use a 45 Colt case, a 45 Colt bullet and a 45 Colt ("Ruger Only") charge, does it become something else? "

Where would I look it up? Gee, I think I'd look under 218 Bee! Yeah, that's where I'd look! If it quacks like a duck, looks like a duck, walks like a duck, it must be a pig!

If you are going to criticize, get you head out of your _________.

I wasn't criticizing . . . I was pointing out your less than elegant manners and know-it-all attitude.

Guess I can now point out your crude attempt at a put-down.

LMAO, for sure.
