.45 ACP Cylinder

If you blackhawk originally came with a 45acp cylinder then you can send it to Ruger to have another installed. If not they wont install one. You can try to find a cylinder in the classifieds or one of the online auction sites. Try to find one the same over length or a little longer than your 45 colt cylinder. You can then have it fitted (or fit it yourself) to your gun. Easiest way is to buy you a convertible and sell your other one. If you have some attachment to your old gun buy the convertible and have the 45 acp fitted to your old gun and sell whats left of your convertible for a reduced price. I've seen 45 acp cylinders got for anywhere from $80 to $150. Ruger will charge around $150 for their cylinder plus you will pay for shipping both ways.
I'm in the process of getting a second .45 colt cylinder for my stainless Blackhawk. There was some confusion on Ruger's part and they originally thought I wanted a .45 acp cylinder. There is absolutely no problem getting a .45 acp cylinder for a .45 colt Blackhawk whether it came with one or not. It will run around $200.00 give or take for a new cylinder and a several week wait time.

Just to clarify the contradictions above about whether or not Ruger will supply a 45 ACP cylinder in a non-original convertible, everyone above is correct.
You can get both answers depending on who you talk to or the cylinder inventory at the time. So if you get a "No" answer call back another day.

I've always backed-off of getting the ACP cylinder. I'm thinking the POI would be drastically different than the 300-325 gr. projectiles slung down the barrels of my .45 Colt cal. Blackhawks. Can anyone offer some insight, if you please?

You have a very valid point. But I see you have adjustable sights on your 45's. :wink:
I think that is what they are for, to adjust your sights to point of impact for different loads.
If you haven't gotten a 45 acp cylinder by now you probably won't. I called several times over the years thinking about getting a 9mm cylinder for my NM Blackhawk in SS. Ruger has always said "No Problem, send your gun in". I haven't yet and probably won't. Nor will I get a 45 acp cylinder for my SS Bisley 45 Colt. Which I think is a great idea by the way. I don't shoot the awesome 44 special in my SBH or 629 44 mags either. :shock: I just down load my 44's.
But anyone who wants to do it just go for it! Maybe someday I will get it done!.

I too have never gone for the convertibles or extra ACP cylinders although I see nothing wrong with it as good 'insurance'.
However I was also curious about the change in point of impact. By surface planing and minor modifications to a S&W moon clip I fired some ACP in my Ruger 45 Colt cylinder. The accuracy was fine but the point of impact changed in both elevation and also moved a little to the left. I don't mind adjusting my sight to shoot them for an extended period but too lazy to switch back and forth.

I wish that folks who primarily wanted a .45 ACP Ruger could buy one without the expense of a largely unwanted .45 Colt Cylinder.
I have a couple .45 Convertibles now and really like them, but in years gone by, I had a couple 70 Series Colt 1911A1s, Beaucoup .45 ACP Ammo and Brass and no real desire to get into another Caliber.....
And was reluctant to spend "Convertible Prices" when I really wanted a .45 ACP Single Action.
{This goes double for the EMFs--a .45 ACP with a 3" Barrel and Birdshead Grips might make a nice back-up in the fields or in town, but not for convertible prices--and the Tariff for Dual Cylinders seems much higher with the Eye-Talian Guns.....}

I'm one of the ones that do not need a .45 Colt as I have no requirement for 'Ruger only' loads and no longer handload. When I hit 70 yrs my bucket list got too big to spend time doing that. .45 ACP has been a favorite cartridge of mine since MP school in 1961 so I found the little Birds Head models perfect for me. I got two - the blued one is my everyday Ruger and the stainless one is my 'Sunday, go to meetin' gun. They are relatively inexpensive to shoot, shoot to point of aim and pack a pretty good wallop with +P hollow points. My walking in the woods gun is a .44 Special flattop with BB loads but I find the little .45s to be perfect for me. I paid a reasonable $$ amount for all my Rugers. My Dan Wesson Valor was another story.

Some years ago I lucked into a 4 5/8" om 357 flat top someone converted to 45 acp which is one sweet shooter in just the right size. It may get a colt cyl someday but so far it doesn't scream for one.
