I receintly purchased one of the Ruger new model flat tops in 44special.
Remembering all the hoopla about the Skeeter load of 7.5gr of Unique, I went to loading 100 rounds today. After finishing I then look at my 49th Edition of Lyman and find I may have made a mistake. I purchased
240gr swc from Origon Trail for this load and Lyman says the max for 240 is 6.5gr. So my question is do I pull all these bullets and remeasure or is the load OK? What bullet did Skeeter use with the 7.5gr of Unique?

Thanks Gary

.

Each person must shoot only what they feel is safe.

Would hate to damage a great gun trying a few handloads that I personally question.

Having said that, 7.5 grains of Unque is my most common load in the 44 Special when using Oregon Trail LaserCast 240 SWC bullets.

Having been using that load for over 35 years.

I agree with all the others. I have a pair of the 44 Spls,, and I tried a bunch of different loads in mine,, & 7.5 grns of Unique under a 240 grn LSWC is an excellent choice.

Are the OT Lasercast bullets flat base bullets? It's hard to tell from their website.

Thanks.

Gary;
The NRA had .44 Special loads laboratory tested complete with pressures. I have a copy of that article on my hard drive. If ANYONE wants a copy, just send me a Private Message with your email. I'll send it by attachment.

The 7.5 grs of Unique with a 240-250 Keith bullet is a classic load and in NO way is it a problem with any modern (after 1950), full size .44 Special revolver (S&W, Colt, Taurus, Ruger, etc). I have shot thousands of these loads through various .44 Specials including a Cimarron Colt Clone without issue.

I'm willing to bet that we will see a "44 special Ruger ONLY" in the future in the loading books.

After all it happened with the 45Colt so why not the 44 Sprcial
