Hi all, Ive been a member for awhile, but it as been quite some time since Ive been on. I bought a 44 flat top in Tulsa Saturday. Barrel has been cut down, but I like it! My question is, what base pin does it use? Does it share this part with any other models? It has a funny looking base pin (not a Belt Mtn) with a spring loaded pin in the end. I assume it is an aftermarket New Model.

If its a New Model Ruger , the little spring loaded pin is required to keep the transfer bar from snagging on the back of the firing pin. And yes the base pins are common between many model's that share the same frame size.
A call to Ruger should fetch you a new factory base pin, and most likely for free.

Welcome to the Forum!
If your gun is a 5 digit,,, non-prefix gun,,, it's an original Old Model 44 Flattop, and the base pin is the wrong one. You need a pin w/o the tip piece. Ruger will not have any. They stopped making OM parts long ago.
You can do one of the following things.
Remove the spring loaded tip from the pin you have & it'll work fine.
Buy an aftermarket OM base pin from Belt Mtn.
Place a WTB ad here & get an OM base pin.

Steve, welcome to the forum, yes, need to know just what lockwork may be in the gun, if it was updated, and has the transfer bar?? between the hammer and the firing pin,,,then you NEED the plunger base pin to make it work properly.......

well then being it is no longer "original" anyway, then either as noted above, simply "disable" ( grind off the "springy thingy") or get a same length oldmodel pin, ask in the classifieds section, tell them just what model you have, and as its been altered no need to get an "exact" proper, correct style base pin , just one that is long enough, shouldered or non shouldered, up to YOU.......

According to Bill Ross' book, you are probably looking for a "collared" base pin about 3.58" long. That's essentially the same as the pin you have, but without the "springy thingy".

Like Dan says, a minute or so on a grinder and you're in bidness, unless you care about "originality" but with the barrel cut down that's rather a moot point.

There was an earlier "non-collared" pin about 3.28" long, but finding one might be difficult.

:)

You don't have to do anything, the new model pin with plunger in the back end works fine whether or not the gun has been converted.

But for authenticity, and old model flat top that s/n 11,XXX should have a non-collared base pin.

What length is the barrel cut down to? If less than 4 5/8", perhaps someone installed the new model "nail head" pin from the new model 3 3/4" sheriff model to get additional ejector rod reach. What's the front end of the pin shaped like?

This shows the nail head pin:
