.44 carbine question

I've got an opportunity to pick up a .44 carbine international at a reasonable price. Problem is, someone at some point in time checked the stock and I'm pretty sure it wasn't Ruger.


Here's a couple pics of the checkering work.. If someone could verify that it is indeed an after thought, that would really help me out..

I'm a far cry from an expert, but the stock looks a lot like mine .....except it looks like someone did some checkering on yours.
I personally like the way it looks mike

PS: the experts who really know what they're talking about will be by soon and give you much better info than I can !! Be patient !

I have two factory lettered guns that have a different pattern. Best to verify through ruger. All my checkered guns have different patterns for each model.

well, got it home.. Stripped the metal off the stock to do a good once over to see if anything was broke/missing and clean the snot out it.. It's bluing is in a sad shape, the stock isn't bad and the checkering, even if it isn't Ruger still looks good...


I knew Ruger no longer services the .44 carbine, but I didn't know (or give it much thought) to the fact that will also not reblue it.. The guy I talked to at the service department said they won't touch them at all... They'll replace them, but won't touch them..

I've got a call out to a semi-local gunsmith who does rebluing... It'll cost me a little more, but not much since I won't have to ship it...

I'm 9 weeks out before I see the finished product. But I sent everything down to be done. So the redfield bases and the rings will be blued a the same time (I'm hoping that they will come close to looking all the same, but we'll see).

In the mean time, I'll send the Leupold scope in to be serviced and get the stock stripped and find someone to stand the checkering back up. Since it won't be original anymore, I'm thinking I'll go with the hand rubbed finish rather than the original finish.

I'll post pictures when I get everything back together..

let me help you, as far as i know there are about 5 maybe 6 known 44X-C out there. i have two of them, i know where a few more are and there on this fourm. there RARE!!!! if not the rarest. the 44SP-C, ther about the same amount, i have two of them also. the Ruger letter with look like this. "with Hand Checkering" all 4 of my letters say that.

It is beleaved that these's Hand Checkard" 44 guns where used to show the "old man" what it would look like. Bill Sr. LOVE IT!!! so did Walter Burger. so the first main run (bulk) where 10-22 SP-C, this was Late and i do mean late 1966, but the bulk of the guns where in 1967. the run was beleved to be around 450 Fingergoove 10-22.
I love them too, have 8 of them now.
