.405 Winchester #1

I had one of my favorite Ruger rifles on the bench today. It's the stainless .405 Winchester #1 they did years ago:

The load was 54.0 of 3031 with a 300 grain Hornady RN. Accuracy, while not world class, was good for a round like this. In fact, most 5 shot groups @ 100 yards were just under 2".

Love mine as well, a blued/walnut one. Still remember wanting one and not being able to locate any. Just wanted it for the classic combo of the cartridge in that classically styled platform. Perfect match I feel.

My late model 1895 shoots like a house afire with the 300gr Hornady roundnose (MOA!) but unfortunately, they are too tender even for small deer. Resorted to Woodleigh Weldcores at over a dollar a pop but haven't had a chance to try them on game yet.

I've heard the same thing about the Hornady on game Craig. Never used mine in the field, but my gun loves that slug over 3031.

Had one blow up on a little doe's shoulder. Killed her good but penetration was dismal. Found only a small piece of the lead core. Apparently they're replicating the original poorly performing bullets and I'm not the only one to find out the hard way. It's a shame because it's a wonderful cartridge. At least we have good bullets from Woodleigh, Barnes and North Fork.

Hornady made a 300 grain spire point 405 for a while. Not sure if it's still available but it may be tougher ("may" being the key word).

My 1895 Win. shoots cast bullets very well and penetration is not an issue. Dr.C

Ya, I'm impressed with the design. Montana Bullet Works makes a great slug, so I have no doubt their 405 will be a winner. I plan on ordering some and will let you guys know how they shoot.

I've tried that bullet in my blued version . Worked real well with AA5744 & IMR 4198 .
With either of those powders my 405 will hold them at 1+ in. @ 100 yds.

Thanks Steve. I actually have 3 or 4 pounds of AA5744 so I'll give it a try.
