22lr ammo what am I missing

I was at the local gun shop yesterday just checking prices and killing time.
They had 50 round plain white boxed Remington 22lr for $12.50, $125 a brick.
What am I missing?
Am I stupid or is he CRAZY?
Is this some special ammo or are things really that bad.

I was in our local Fleet Farm a couple days ago to pickupsome nuts and bolts. Thought I'd check for .22 ammunition just for the heck of it, expecting to be disappointed...... lo and behold, 525 round boxes of Remington "Golden Bullet" bulk ammo. Limit of one box per customer per day at $19.95 a box. Not my favorite stuff, but I took a box.

All gone by the next morning, of course, but that's the first I've seen for a long time (aside from the 24K solid gold stuff at the gun shows). Maybe things are starting to loosen up.

Many of the small retailers have been taking advantage of the recent panic. I understand their desire to make as much profit as they can, as long as they don't try to pretend their costs have gone up as much as their selling price... I simply don't buy any ammo from them and let them know why. Patience is the best thing you can have right now, IMO.

I happened to be at the local WalMart this morning after work (7:30), and they had ammo.

I bought three 100 rd boxes of Federal 9mm for $21.67 per box.

They also had .40, 7.62x39, Winchester .22LR (333 pack for $9.97) , .357 and others...

I found some Winchester 333 packs @ BassPro a week or so back. It seems like .22lr ammo is slowly starting to appear in the stores again.

I agree with 9x19....show a bit of patience and you should be able to find .22s @ "normal" pricing as the year progresses.

It is... I bought some of it last year at 9.97 for the 333s and 15.97 for the 555s.

I had six boxes of each awhile back and traded them all for a like new 4" GP100 w/ Galco holster. :mrgreen:

Basically, all these clowns are trying to sell 22 ammo at the same price as 9mm and 40 caliber Premium Self defense ammo like Rangers and gold dots which are too expensive to shoot.
Same with my Local store. Everyone is getting in on the rip off.
I posted just last week my local store has some 50 round boxes of .22 cyclones, the real cheapo stuff, $27.
I did not buy. $27 for a tiny box of cheapo .22's? Holy cow.

We have to refuse it until it comes back down to $20 a 500 count brick where it was 6 months ago.
The wholesale price has not gone up that much, because some online sellers,(very few) have the
same price as before this insanity started. So if anyone says it's because cost has gone up they
are lying. Walmart wouldn't be selling a bulk box of Federal 525's for $18 if it cost them $100.
Yet cheaper than dirt, ATG, and many more, has the same box at $149 that Walmart has for $18.
So the online shops and Local gun shops are just trying to gouge while they can.

There are two online shops that ARE NOT gouging, but they are frequently out, Midway and Natchez. I just got a couple of thousand rounds of CCI and Federal at the normal prices.
Those two businesses will have all my on line business from now on.
The only way to stop the gouging is to lay off the hoarding, a few thousand rounds are fine, but buying up 10k at a time is not helping.So if you are determined the end of the world is near at
least stop buying the overpriced stuff, and stuff yourself silly only at normal prices.
If that means shooting a pellet gun for a few months, that is answer.

Natchez is absolutely not interested in gouging...I ordered ammo from them this week and discussed the practice of gouging with them..They are not going to play that game..

I told them I thought they were doing the right thing and that we are closely watching who is and who is not gouging and we have long memories...

I witnessed this 22 insanity recently at a local auction. There was a sealed 500 count brick of federal lighting HV, had a date on it from late 90's. Crazy thing sold for $105 + sales tax. The guy that bought it was just as happy as could be. Never thought 22 ammo would ever sell for that much.

Got to admit it I'm old and always fill up when hit 1/2 tank..OK, did run out of gas 50 years ago with my family in the car.

No you cannot. Champions Choice is out of all 22LR and has been. And so is champion shooters supply also.
The only ammo out there right now, today in stock, is Surplusammo and CTD, it's $150 a brick of 500 for the cheapo stuff. They have a variety of super overpriced 22LR waiting for your credit card.
I check every online source daily from Palmettostate, Champion, able, CTD, Surplusammo, Cabelas, Midway, natchez, Ammotogo, about ten different sites and nobody has 22LR ammo.
When they get it at Midway and Natchez, its at a normal price and gone literally in minutes.
All other sites get a few cases in and mark it up to Rip off prices.
I used to used ammunitiontogo and Ableammo almost exclusively.
I was used to getting some great buys at both places. Remember the Federal HST 9mm for $15 a box of 50? They used to get nice exotic ammo at great prices.
ATG Also always had aquila 22lR for $27 for 500 and it is some of the most accurate "cheap" bulk ammo I have used and in my experience is as good as Wolf and SK.
Now that they are trying to pass off .22LR for $150 plus $17 shipping, I won't use them ever again.
BYE BYE Ammunitiontogo, keep your marked up 10 times ammo. The wholesaler didn't jack the price up
by 1000 percent, so they are price gouging their loyal customers for a fast profit.
Marking a $20 box of Remington golden bullets to $150 is obscene.
I will stick with Midway or Natchez or Cabelas and have enough to shoot for years until those 3 companies get more stock.

Bought a box of Fedeal Champions online yesterday and the shipping was almost the same as what the pre-drought prices for the ammo alone would have been. Hard to justify buying one box at a time, but hadn't tried that brand yet and just want to learn what my SR22 likes and doesn't like. Very difficult to experiment right now but at least when things return to normal I will know exactly what to look for.

Last year I bought a bulk pack of CCI Blazer for 190.00 for 5250 rounds so that's something like .038 each. I do wish I had bought more but I still have some but not much left. They work great with my 22/45 Lite. I'll continue to wait and if I run out, oh well. I just can't part with that much dough for a 22.

I went to buy some ammo at Natchez a while back and their shipping costs were IMO out of whack so I did not continue with the order. With the limit on the ammo you could purchase the cost of shipping added greatly to the price per round.

Far be it for me to say what is normal for someone else, but Natchez has the 525 bulk packs (not in stock; just listing prices) marked at $38 on sale, without shipping. That same box was selling at Wal-Mart for about $20 or $25 not that long ago, unless there is something special about this 525 box but it is the only one Natchez even has listed for Federal. http://www.natchezss.com/Ammo.cfm?c... And this whole time, while it may not come in often, my local Wal-Mart has been getting in trickles of ammo and not gouging. I appreciate that, even if they are a big box store. It does bug me that I have seen multiple instances of Wal-Mart employees leaving with ammo less than 10 minutes after it has been put out for sale and none, or only 1 or 2 boxes making it to the shelves. Still better than the local gun shops charging $15+ for 50 round boxes of cheap stuff or the insane prices at the gun shows around.

Natchez may not be charging outrageous prices like Cheaper than Dirt or Ables.... But they are certainly higher than normal. But normal is not what it used to be.

Local is the way to buy so as to avoid extreme shipping costs... But finding available stock or a store that isn't trying to gouge even more than the online stores is almost impossible. I was able to get one of the $38 boxes of Federals from Natchez yesterday that my local gun shop was trying to sell for $89 back in early February. Never stepping foot in that store again. Three weeks ago I lucked out and bought a box of Remington Golds in a bulk box for $24. Best price I have bought ammo locally since this whole craze started. That was from a big name sporting goods store with a one box limit.

My LGS sold 44K rounds of 22LR in 2 hours. I don't know the price yet but will try to find out later in the week because I need to get some of the next shipment they get in.

I just put my target pistols up for the next six months. I got caught with my pants down on this one. I have never ever not been able to walk into WalMart or any other gun store and pick up 22lr. I won't have my pants down the next time. I will not pay that price for ammo. I put the target guns up, I will start checking for ammo again in about 6 months and see if it has gone some what back to normal. If not they will sit till it does. I don't need 22lr to protect myself or feed or protect my family, I have ammo for that. So 22lr is only a hobby and or something that I enjoy doing very much but it is not life changing so let every one else fight over it and I will wait.

I bought 5K last summer and still have a few left but like you I can't see paying this .10+ for a 22. I don't expect to see the .038 I paid last time and have no idea what the price will eventually settle at but I'll go through what I have left while waiting. I'll pick some up over time when the price is reasonable.

I think that is part of why the shortage continues... lots of folks who were unprepared for this shortage are determined to stock up NOW.

Yours is the more level-headed approach, IMO.

Prices have not gone up significantly at the wholesalers, or most of the big retailers like Wal-Mart, so I think patience will win out but it may take a few more months.

Following the shortage in 08-09 (when the big mistake was first elected), I started buying a box of .22 every time I went to the store (Wal-Mart, Academy Sports, etc.) regardless the reason I was there. Just one box, and it slowly built up until when this silliness started again, I am quite well stocked and get to keep shooting my .22s.

Once this round of silliness is over, I will return to buying one box every time I visit the store...
