.22 single six date?

I just got this Single Six 5.5” barrel from a neighbor and I'm trying to figure out what year it's from, but I don't quite understand the serial numbers jumping around so much, I think it's late 50's but I'm not sure and typing it in to Rugers look up does work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Number is 402979

Looks like a 1964. If it's a 5.5" it will be a model RSS5 or RSS5X depending on if it was shipped with the 22-mag cylinder. The RSSM models would have come with the 6.5" barrel. The serial number were originally in different blocks but by the time the serial numbers got up to 400,000 they become intermixed. A letter from Ruger would advise the exact model it was shipped as, and my money is on it being an RSS5X given they were built almost 7 to 1 versus the nonconvertibles in 5.5"

Yep. My first Old Model SS was a 1965 RSS5X as confirmed by letter and is kinda close in SN to this one.

Roundgate with a 5.5" barrel . . . it's very likely a 1964 convertible. A letter would sort this out for sure.
