I purchased a new 22/45 and love it! However, I was cleaning it this weekend and my father-in-law wanted to see it. So as he was looking at it I got up to get some water. When I came back in he was putting it back together. Being that he has owned and fired guns longer than I have been alive I didn't think anything about it.

Now the bolt is hanging on something and the lever to disassemble will not budge!

Any suggestions? I hope this can be fixed as I LOVE this pistol!

My first question is did he know to use the magazine to put it together, or did he force the MSH lever? I am assuming from the new comment it is a MkIII.

It sounds like the hammer strut didn't engage in the cup on the MSH. My advice, although someone will have better, is to put an empty mag in it, hold the trigger back and try to get the hammer to rotate up. Then remove the mag, and try to get the MSH level loose while shaking the pistol. I had the same issue once and finally was able to get it apart. On the steel guns you can just drive one of the pins out (sear IIRC), but on the plastic frames I suspect that would break it.

Yes, it is a brand new Mk III with less than 500 rounds through it. I think he forced the MSH lever.

I am debating sending it to Ruger or taking it to a local gunsmith that I have had good luck with.

Welcome to the Forum!
THe MKIII has stumped many newer gun owners. There are a few excellent posts around here in the archives about them. Do a search before spending money & time with a gunsmith,, or sending it to Ruger.

The sear or hammer is stuck, for whatever reason.

Try the brute force method as follows:
insert the mag
depress the trigger
while holding the trigger back, rotate the pistol muzzle down and vertical
rap the muzzle sharply on a padded surface, like the floor. Jam it hard. This should release the sear and move the hammer forward.
(Rapping the muzzle on a padded surface won't hurt the pistol, do it hard).

If that doesn't work, you might want to try physically unsticking the sear as described here. http://www.guntalk-online.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=421
