Would this be a good light magnum load? I am shooting it in a 6.5" blackhawk. I am thinking around 1150-1200fps. Thanks

My Lyman (third edition) pistol and revolver handbook shows 9 gr of Unique with a 215 gr cast bullet as over max. They start with 7.8 gr at 960 fps and 25,800 CUP and go to 8.7 at 1,111 fps and 36,900 CUP. Note. the 7.8 gr load is listed as the accuracy load for that bullet.

For the velocity you are trying to get you will need a slower powder such as 2400. Once again the Lyman guide shows 14.5 gr of 2400 with a 215 gr LSWC at 1,044 fps and 29,000 CUP and go up to 16.2 gr at 1,312 fps and 38,100 CUP.

All this data is for a 4" vented test barrel; you will likely get higher velocities with your 6.5" barrel; it is likely that the 7.8 gr Unique load will do everything you describe as a light magnum load.

Here is some actual chrony data from my 6.5 inch 41 magnum Blackhawk using a 215 grain cast LSWC. Apparently at one time I did try out 9 grains of Unique because I must have found it listed somewhere.
41 mag
Load 8.5 grains Unique
215 grain LSWC
Average velocity: 1,225.6 fps
Standard deviation: 15.2 fps
Extreme spread: 37.2 fps

41 mag
Load 9 grains Unique
215 grain LSWC
Average velocity: 1,286.4 fps
Standard deviation: 16.1 fps
Extreme spread: 35.8 fps

Both loads used a winchester large pistol primer.

I was using my old and I mean old 45th edition lyman reloading book. It lists a 212 to 217gr. cast bullet starting with 7.0 up to 10gr. as the max. The accuracy load is listed as unique @ 10gr. the maximum load. They must of changed it over the years to be on the safe side.

I agree with Lee. My mold drops bullets at about 212 grs. I usually use 7.5 grs. of Unique

I've shot 10.0grs in mine, but feed it a stedy diet of 7.5grs. Less wear and tear on the gun, and the shooter. :)
