183 series ftf

I recently inherited a 183 series mini 14 from my father which has had intermittent light primer strikes and ftf’s, starting after about 50 rounds or so. A gunsmith disassembled the bolt, cleaned out the brass particles, and replaced the firing pin which improved the problem for two range sessions, but we’re back to the ftf’s. I’ve been searching for a replacement bolt, but they seem be nonexistent. Thoughts?

1st I would replace the firing pin spring and maybe even the fire pin again. 2nd I would replace the recoil spring in the forend if you don't know how it has been stored. Since many lock the bolt open in storage and that will weaken the recoil spring to the point of not ejecting fired cases and or not allowing the bolt to lock completely up.
When replacing the bolt, it should be fitted by a gunsmith and checked for proper head space. My free 2 cents worth.

Thank you for the suggestions! The recoil spring has been replaced (forgot to mention that). I'm surprised the gunsmith didn't suggest the firing pin spring. Do you know if the 183 bolt will accept a newer pin spring?

The Mini-14 is a hammer fired rifle. It has no firing pin spring, nor does it have a striker spring....It does have a hammer spring but one would have to cut about 1/4 of it's coils off before it would cease setting off primers. I have proven that with actual testing....My suggestion would be to first do a good bolt and chamber cleaning so the headspace can be accurately checked. If that proves to be within spec, check the firing pin protrusion. FP protrusion should be .026"-.038".... And do stay away from any/all so-called "extra-power springs". Not only are they not needed, they will actually cause long-term damage to your rifle....Contrary to internet legend, Mini-14 firing pins are available from several sources, including Midway, ASI, Gun Parts Corp (Numrich Arms), Jack First and others.......Hope this helps.
