180 Spire Points

Is anyone useing the 180 spire point for deer and/or bear? I am the proud new owner of a DW model 40 8" and was given 60+ rounds of ammo loaded with this bullet. I understand it was a favorite of the ram shooters but not sure it will be effective for hunting.

Are we discussing the 357 mag? Since this is a Ruger Forum, many do not know the model or such for a DW, (me included.)
Next, just about any 180 grn bullet will work on a thin skinned animal like a deer.

No experience here just an opinion. A 180gr spire point .358 (35 caliber rifle bullet) out of an 8" barrel revolver might not have the velocity to mushroom very much. I suspect it would pass through a deer pretty easily.

Even in a 357 Max, a 180 gr rifle bullet is unlikely to offer much, if any expansion at any distance. Since an unexpanded spire point isn't likely to do much tissue damage, I'd advise against using this bullet for deer. There are many, many good quality bullets out there that would work better for hunting. The Hornady 180 gr XTP, and the Speer 170 gr DC come to mind. I'm sure there are others.

Thanks guys; you have confirmed the question(s) I had concerning this bullet. I will religate these to paper and steel targets and pick a better bullet for game.
