.17 HMR Single Six

Help Support Ruger Forum:

They are good guns & a bit desirable to some folks. There are a few variations,, such as a Hunter,, or the convertible ones.

As long as you can easily get ammo,, GO FOR IT!

I have both the standard and hunter versions. I love them both, so far just for plinking, but the Hunter will be used for varmint control once I get out of the city.

They pair nicely with the .17HMR RAR

Love 17HMR. Don't have them in a pistol version. My Marlin VRX 17HMR is instant DRT with varmints. I just recently installed a ATN day/night digital scope on it to do some coyote night hunts.

Seems like the 17 HMR is more of a rifle round.
IE - the longer barrel is needed to get that little pill up to it's effective velocity.
Anyone know the velocity out of a pistol, or actually used it on vermin?

I haven't clocked my .17 HMR handgun yet,, but it's still quite impressive on a critter in the handgun. There are a few groundhogs who tried to run when I pulled it out. Then,, there was this crow,, and it made a good puff of feathers when the little pill spoke to it.

All I can say is: GOOD LUCK :( with that. I use a suppressed 17HMR rifle to dispatch trapped coyotes and bobcats as the little bullet doesn't damage hides much. Based on shooting over 40 animals, the average time from bullet strike to dead critter is 15-45 seconds and this is with near perfect bullet placement from a distance of 20-50 yards. How far can a dinged coyote run in that amount of time?

I've shot some coyotes, and a few foxes with my .17 rifle. I use a neck shot,, and none ran anywhere. BUT,,, I had the time & opportunity to precisely aim & place my shots.
I've shot groundhogs & such with all kinds of shots. All died fairly quickly,, but knowing that the .17 bullet's limitations,, I preferred the neck shot on coyotes & foxes.

As with all types of hunting & wanting to be ethical by making a quick, clean kill, you have to know your gun, ammo, and make a good shot that will do so. I wouldn't trust a .17 to do that with a body/chest shot.

I've had zero problems buying .17 ammo it's plentiful down here.

As a matter of fact after buying my .17 about 2 years ago I got ammo at between $16 and $17 and it's still $17 per box and about $3 less expensive per box than .22 magnum ammo.

Mine is a Freedom Arms, is tack accurate and I can shoot it all day but haven't taken game with it yet.

I owned one for a period of time. Mine was a stainless steel Hunter model that was convertible for either .17M2 or .17HMR. It came into my local pawn shop and I could buy it right for price so I did. My problem was that it was very heavy and rather expensive to shoot in either caliber. It soon went down the road to buy something that I would actually use.

I've always wanted to that with a 17HMR

Yep,,, that little .17 HMR 17 grn plastic tipped pill can create a heck of a mess at times.

I actually keep a .17 HMR rifle in my truck for on the job critter work. But my helper asked me a few years back about the handgun,, so we carried it a bit. On our travels to & from different places,, as we'd travel back to his house,, we'd often stop at a place where groundhogs were & try & pop a few. And the occasional crow,, well,, just a bonus. Between the rifle in his hands & the revolver in my hands,, we'd make the critters sweat. (His uncle owned the property and wanted them varmints taken care of!)

I see .17 HMR in several places. I bought a few cases long ago,, & have plenty. Now,, HM2 is a little trickier. But I have a good supply there too.
