Newbee to pistols so please bear with me. I'm sorry if this has been posted previously. I've got an SR9 with the 17 shot magazine. What is the proper method of loading a round in the chamber with a full magazine? I've had a few folks tell me to insert a fully loaded magazine, rack the slide, release the mag and manually add another round in the mag.

Bingo! dropping the slide on a chmbered round could damage the extractor.

I'm not seeing how this is different from normal cycling, especially if you slingshot the slide.

When you feed a round from the magazine the round's extractor groove slips up behind the extractor hook as the round is chambered. If you drop a round directly into the chamber and then close the slide, the extractor hook has to snap over the edge of the case head and that's harder on it.

Doing it a few times won't hurt most guns but it's not a good general practice. 1911's are particularly not happy if you do it a lot.
