I got this one from an old guy who no longer wanted it. It's a '84 and has points ignition;I replaced both sets today. It had no spark and the carb was inop when I got it. The Walbro carburetor was not working...it's simple,like those on Tecumseh lawn mowers I've worked on. I also changed the lower unit oil.

I got it running today in a barrel using a rope...water pump is good. It's missing the bendix style recoil starter;maybe I can get one. A co. in WI sold me the points (Prestolite makes him 500 sets a year) and a fuel hose fitting.

It needs to be adjusted to run at a lower idle and/or maybe some more carb work.

I have four small Mercs and a 3hp Johnson that all need work. This state makes you title these and only one presently has it's paper. I'm working towards titling the others. It's something for a retired guy to do.

Old outboards are fun. I'm still running my 1986 Mariner InLine 115. Screaming motor. And 2 strokes, as long as they are kept cool and well oiled will run forever.

I have that link already. Those old OMC motors were very reliable. CL (San Antonio) has an old 5hp Johnson from that era for sale.
 
I have a friend who pulled a Johnson outboard out of a dumpster a few months ago... according to him made sometime in the early 60's.... damn thing looks brand new... but takes some kind of pressurized fuel tank I think.
 
Took my old 10hp Johnson in for a carb tune up and found out the carb was no longer available. Then learned that the same engine could be made into a 15 horse with just a different carb, which they had in stock. :D :D So now its a 15.

I also have a 1985 85hp Johnson Javalin that still runs like new. I have it on a 16 foot fiber glass run a bout from Sea Sprite. It works on some really big water. Used it to teach all my children to water ski and now it serves once in a while for fishing.

Them ol Johnsons is goooood! :D

Found an article online about converting over to a single line fuel tank.

Those duel line pressure fuel tanks are hard to come by. Had a fellow tell me both my tanks may be worth more than the outboard.

I had a 17' Sea Sprite with a 140 Mercruiser from '85 to '89;it would go 42-44mph. It had a 4 cyl Olds engine.

That's cool about the carb change for a 50% hp increase.

The 3hp Johnson just needs carb cleaning since it fired on a shot of ether...not good for 2 cycle engines but showed spark was present. It has a folding lower unit makes it easy to transport in a car trunk.

A 7.5 Mercury I am working on has a carb with integrated pump which may need a kit with new diaphragms. They look OK but are 38 years old.

I probably will replace impellers on all of these.
 
No pics but will post someday if I do. There's lots of stuff on various forums and Youtube which is helpful to me at times.

Both have the same bore and stroke...Ive seen that often....maybe carb or just the jet is the diff in hp.
 
Growing up around 50s and 60's wooden boats and outboards has left me appreciative of the reliability, low maintenance and power of modern equipment. One of the things that amazes me about my 25 HP Merc two stroke besides the power, is how easy the recoil start pull is. I have it on a 14' aluminum boat and was running down wind in +20 MPH gust to get to the leeward rounding at a regatta last weekend. Pretty sure I was doing 35 MPH.

A friend has an older 9.9 Johnson that might have more starter pull than my 25.

I could likely get my head turned for a fifties racing Merc on a Yellowjacket. The Merc that started backwards for reverse.
 
I had a 1983 18hp Mercury on a 14' semi-v aluminum boat;it's the only outboard I've bought new(don't know how fast it went). I have a 1960 15hp Merc that's not running and is missing the recoil starter. Before that,had a Mark 10 ('57 or '58) Merc that got stolen in '69 and ran it on a 12' alum boat. With the 15,it would go so fast it was a little scary,boat only weighed 110 pounds. Those old ones were purposely underated,one of Kiekaefer's ideas.
 
I bought a used 14 foot plywood runabout in 1962 that had a 25 Hp Evinrude outboard. That old motor cranked up on a single pull ever time and not only took me fishing, but also loads of joy riding in the back bay of Newport Beach Harbor. Even took my FIL and BIL fishing on Big Bear Lake one time.
My BIL was constantly reaching into his tackle box and pulling out some Concoction that was "GUARANTEED" to catch fish and handing it to me and saying, "HERE, TRY this"; I noted HE never used it and I suspect he was a sucker for them ads that assured you it WOULD result in a stringer full of fish.
ps: They didn't work for me, I guess them California trout were more picky about what they ate.

My grandfather had I'm pretty sure a 1957 Evinrude 25 on a Lyman at his cabin in Ontario. It was a pretty metallic blue and was called a "Sportwin" I can remember trying to pull start it when I was probably about 10 and it felt like pulling on a rope tied to a tree. That motor ran into the 1980's on a diet of auto motor oil for the mix most of the time. It was dead nuts reliable as was the 3 1/2 HP "Lightwin" kicker.

My wife drove the 25 first time a tiller steer to pull me skiing before we were married. We both gave up on the idea when she couldn't figure out which way to push the tiller and was heading straight at me at full speed. I wasn't worried, just had a belt on and could dive under the prop. We'd disconnect the steering wheel and sit in the back for a little more speed for skiing.
