The second time I shot it the extractor end was bent around sideways where it would not go into the slot on the barrel. Upon investigation it was almost broken completely off. She'll be going back to Ruger. Fom

Did you try seeing it it simply slipped out of it's position a bit? If not that, it's just a simple 3 minute change out for a new one.

Always make sure the slide is locked back before taking the rifle apart.

Once the trigger assembly is removed, there's no mechanism to do so.

To remove the barrel you have to have the bolt in the rear position or you can damage the extractor. If you have the trigger assembly out you will have to hold the bolt back by hand.

Correct about the barrel removal but much easier to simply remove the bolt assembly rather than trying to hold it back while removing the barrel.

Not easy to do while driving and not necessary for quick takedown, but, certainly will work.

DRIVING are you serious?

You MUST pull back the bolt to separate the parts of the rifle, it is NECESSARY!!

u don't live out west do you? a little levity injected in a silly thread...that is all.
locking the bolt back is fine, u don't need to remove it

Sadly there have been some otherwise good reviews/videos of this gun on the internet that do not stress the necessity of locking the bolt back before taking the gun down. The extractor takes the hit if you don't. Luckily it's an inexpensive part even if you break one.

I'd send it back to Ruger they'll probably give you a new one, and then also, buy yourself a Volquartsen extractor, which is a nicer and tougher piece and isn't a lot of money.

I've got one coming to me next week, and I'm going to slip it into the pack as insurance. Everyone makes mistakes from time to time.
