10/22 takedown serial # question ????

What is Ruger doing with their serial numbers ?

Just picked up 2 10/22 takedowns from different distributors .
They both arrived today & the serial numbers are way off .

1st one is 359-77xxx

2nd one is 820-03xxx

Did they use current receivers for the first runs or was this a mistake ?

Anyone else have one & whats the serial prefix ?

The 3 I have are all 359 prefix. Who was the distributor? Mine came from Davidsons and Sports South.

Mines 820 and is from Lipseys. I was dissapointed Ruger got cheap and only included 1 mag.

Yea . I got lucky with my serial number . 4 digit & palindrome :) .

I think Ruger could have put an extra mag in also .

Going to try & mill out a wood stock for my other one . Have to break it down & take a look at it .

Mine is a a 359 prefix but is a good ways off from the 359-77xxx posted. It is 359-86614 (not skeered to post the number, I didn't steal it). I do not know who it came through. Regardless of the prefix, they are going to sell a TON of these rifles so there will be several "four digit" guns, if you consider the first 9999 guns in each prefix. That works out to 10%.

Mine is 359-582xx. I bought it Tuesday, and it had G-I-19055 on a small label on the box near the Ruger label info.

Forgive me, but why does a different serial number matter?

It's more of simply everyone working together to see where different variations start and stop along the serial number lines. It's all things that may seem very insignificant to some, but it's just a bit we all help with for the RENE. There's cases where there's been models out of line, as it were, in egads to others of a particle model or variation. In the grand scheme of things...it matters to US. :)

What everybody is seeing here is that Ruger just completed their 359- prefix by reaching 359-99999, and since the 360- is already taken by the SR22 Pistol, Ruger had to start numbering 10/22's again with an 820- prefix.
Looks like Ruger could have went to 560- as I don't think any model uses that one yet, but after that, 820- was the next logical choice.
Just think, in probably less than a decade, Ruger will run out of prefix choices and will have to change their serial numbering system.
I show 560-, 830- through 860- and 900- and up as available.

Does anyone out there have personal experience of this happening?? I've never heard or known of a specific instance.....

I have never heard of nor have we ever experienced reporting a full serial number and then having somebody report it as being stolen from them....and I've reported tons of full serial numbers. Even all the full serial numbers reported on RF from its inception, I've never heard of anybody saying "Hey, that's my gun!!".
To me, a serial number is a fingerprint, like the VIN number on a car. The odds are probably a lot higher of having somebody that STUPID into believing they could defraud sombody of what, THEIR GUN???.
And many a collector including our friend Radical Rod wouldn't have anything to look (consecutive and even triplet serial numbers) if nobody reported their full serial numbers.
Guns are tools, but they are also collectibles, and reporting full serial numbers of those collectibles gets a lot more excitement in our hobby (see my post in the collectibles on the 82 "full" serial numbers that I posted for the rare S46 model. By the way, I've got names in my notes beside most of those numbers!.

I see it more as another overhyped worry brought on by the internet. One of those "don't do that or else" things that has no foundation.


Interesting observation about them running out of prefixes. Guess then we'll have non-prefix, prefix and post-prefix non-prefix models. And eople will still call the large framed Vaqueros Old Models. :roll eyes:

Funny how serial numbers mean so much to some and so little to others. I think it is great that some people get so much joy from it. I just noticed last week that a revolver I have been carrying for the last ten years has my fathers birthday for a serial number. Cant believe I never noticed before. It felt like he was there next to me when I noticed it.

My only issue with it is, the fore end stock does not line Up with the butt....

Got mine on April 2nd and is 820-03553 .

My dealer just got in one the other day & the serial number is 820-69696 . Almost bought it , but I picked up the 22/45 Lite first .

I think he still has it if anyone is interested . Let me know & I'll put you with him .

I have not got any from Lipsey's but the three I got from Davidsons all have the 359 prefix the lowest is 359-68368 Got I few more coming from Jerry's this week

My guess is that the blue dot is a factory QA/Inspection sticker placed on the box just before it's sealed up. Probably when it is boxed at the Ruger factory the blue sticker is placed there to signify that the contents have been verified, which is important because right in the middle of the panel Ruger prints a Big Red Warning label telling the dealer/purchaser to make sure the manual and locking device are inside.

My box has one too, in almost the exact same place, and it is underneath the final sealing tape. So if a dealer gets a report that anything is missing my guess is that when they call the Ruger factory the first question will be: "Is the blue circle sticker visible under the packing tape and did the packing tape look intact?"

Of course, it could also be the Mark of the Beast :lol: More likely it's just quality assurance either in packaging or shipment.

Why anyone would want to steal the locking mechanism and padlock and/or the owner's manual for any of these guns is a question I'll leave to Jeff Quinn, and I don't expect anything other than a truly hilarious answer ;).
