I just got a new 10/22 sporter and want to get a good scope. I've been looking at 4x32's and 3x9x32. I realize it just a .22 cal rifle, but I bought the nicer 'Sporter' and would like little nicer scope. Any suggestions?

I don't have to have the most expensive, but I don't want the cheapest either. I've been looking at the Nikon Prostaff line. Somewhere around $100 bucks or so?
What's your intended use?
If you're strictly going to punch paper or protect yourself from marauding tin cans, something like a 4-12X40 AO would be the best way to go... you'll need a cheek pad to raise the comb, as a scope with a 40mm objective would be mounted in pretty tall rings.
If it's for bunnies and squirrels, Weaver has a really slick 1-3X that will mount in very low rings... no cheek pad required.
For all-around use, I'd go with a 2-7X32 with as low a ring as you can get by with. Cheek pad optional, depending on how it fits you.

I've used a Bushnell Banner 4-12x40 on my 10/22, although I didn't require a cheek pad. (probably because my cheeks are padded enough 
) They can be had in my area for $99 when they go on sale at BiMart. I have also used a Nikon Prostaff fixed 4 power rimfire scope that I really like a lot too. It was $109 at Cabellas when I bought it. Either scope works great on my 10/22, and like wwb posted it really depends on what you're going to use your rifle for. Mueller APV.4x14 w/AO for around $125.Great scope for the bucks.
I like the 3-9 powers for this.... on nine power you can see your points of impact on paper at 50 yards... 3 power will give you a better and quicker point of aim when shooting standing.

I have a Deluxe Sporter, and I put a Tasco 3-7 X 20 rimfire scope on it, about $20.

I did use a Weaver T-09 mount instead of the Ruger mount. The T-09 is thinner, and I can still use the iron sights without removing the scope. And I replaced all the scope's screws with stainless hex head ones (comes with Phillips head). The mount and screws were like $9.
The scope surprised me. It's amazingly good for twenty bucks. It is bright enough even on a cloudy day down to dusk. It has a square view, plain reticles, and positive 1/4 MOA clicks. It holds zero most times when I remove it for cleaning the gun. One time it did get off a click to one side.
It looks good on the small 10/22, proportioned. Larger scopes just look clunky and top-heavy to me.

A 3x9 is fine. The Simmons are a fine choice for a .22 rifle. In a pinch you can usually find under $50 options pre-packaged with rings for rimfire rifles at Dicks that work just fine. There was a Dick's Sporting Goods house brand in an orange pack, it was not to heavy, decent glass and had mil dot reticle. They have worked well on a couple .22's I have.
On the other end of the scale, a Leupold 4x with fine reticle or an old Weaver with fine reticle are more than enough for poking holes in paper and pinging cans!

Let me preface this by saying that I am a scope newbie. I recently acquired a 10/22 and put on a Barska 3-9X32 scope. It works well for poking holes in paper at the range.

I have a BSA SW 4 4x32 MM CP that is VERY CLEAR ang has great light gathering and is tough and has never lost zero .Now it's not a Nikon ,but It is a lot of scope for the money and is less than 50 bucks .It's water proof ,fog proof and shock proof .Don't get me wrong if you want the Nikon then get it ,but the BSA will do anything the nikon will do .Heres their web address www.bsa-optics.com there worth a look .
