My son has an older 10/22 stainless and he says the mags are difficult to drop free
when released. If he pushes down on the mag from on top with his finger (through
the ejection port) it drops easily, seemingly indicating there isn't much keeping the
mag from dropping free. I imagine this is a problem dealt with before. Can anyone
put me on to the most common causes and fixes for this to shorten my learning curve.
This is a problem even when the stock is removed so can't be the stock.
Suggestions on where to start problem solving be appreciated?

My guess would be that it is dragging on the magazine well in the stock and not on any metal or plastic ( magazine ) surface. Look very close at these areas with and without the mag in place. Often just a little bit of scraping of the wood inside the stocks mag well cures that problem.

Pull the action from the stock. Take some sand paper and sand the sides of the mag well, where the mag would set, a small amount at a time until the mag drops free. You should be able too pass a business card between the mag and the stock when you are finished.

Work slow and check often and you'll be fine.

OK problem solved. thought I would report back. Problem was my son had
replaced the original mag release with extended mag release (don't know
the brand). The release wasn't allowing the round button piece (don't know
the nomenclature) that holds the mag in place to recede far enough so
that the mag would drop free. It was a tolerance issue with the new mag
release and the rest of the parts. In order to allow the button to recess further
so the mag could fall free I had to file on the mag release lever where it contacts
the trigger unit so that it would allow more movement of the button. I know
this sounds quite convoluted as I go back and read it. But if you're familiar
with how an extended mag release works you can probably figure out what I
am saying. Anyway, a few thousands filed off the contacting surface and WALLA,
the button recedes a little further away from the mag and the mag drops free.
Thanks to all those who offered suggestions and tried to help.
Greatly appreciated.
