Ok, the #1 is going to be dead as a dodo shortly, so I bit the bullet and ordered a 1S 24" BBL. .35 Whelen from Bud's. I love the 35's but the Whelen will be new to me. Anyone have an opinion on it? Thanks, 021

The irony for me is that Ruger finally built Whelen No.1s in the right profile just as they closed down the line forever.

I agitated in vain for years to get them to make a 1S. I got very excited when I first heard they were building one -- only to get PO-ed when it turned out to be a SS/wood 1A!

Soooo, I finally had my own 1S .35 Whelen built a few years back, only to have Ruger do the deed as a last gasp offering.

That about sums up my experience with Ruger marketing.

I was happy to see closeout prices on the 1S .35. At this point, I doubt I'll ever pay that little for one, in very good condition, again. I can only hope the wood will be acceptable and well fitted, but it'll have to wait 'til mid-week at least to see. I don't think I'll even mount a scope on this one, might use it for a "walking around" gun that I had my 30 06 figured for.

Had a dealer in NY pick the best wood for me of the 3 or 4 he had, shipped yesterday, love the Whelen myself, 1a and a K77 already here, he tells me he is expecting 2 K1A Whelens soon, no doubt cleanups. Cost a little more than Bud's, but to tell the truth I didn't think about them, saw mine on GB and couldn't resist.

My opinion is the 35 Whelen is better served in the 1A configuration. I think the current offering of the 1S might be a bit clumsy. I passed. I have a 1A in blue and SS in the Whelen and love them. As far as the cartridge itself, I love it. Great all around for deer and up to bear. Easy to handload for if you handload.

great caliber, recoil like a 30-06 and performance like a 375 H+H. I'll be getting one also.

Love the S, love the A, happy to have both in the Whelen. At these closeout prices, could not resist. I'm not really interested in blued #1s, I'm more of a SS fan, but somehow a few blued have found their way here.

35 Whelen.... great cartridge! I had a 700 Classic in that round. Sold it to buy a K1-A. Sold the #1 to help fund another purchase. What a mistake....on both counts. The 1S doesn't appeal to me so much. But to each his own....

Not shooting in a 1 but in an ER Shaw barreled 77. Most accurate bullet so far is a Sierra 225 SBT

So '021' (OP) calls me and says a #1 in 35 Whelen is available. I waited a week and the idea grew. Seems I have a #1 in 35 Whelen on the way..... I'm changing '021's name to 'ENABLER' on my phone's contact list.
Anyone got pictures of stock wood on their new 35 Whelen or any 2016/recent #1 Ruger purchase?

Don't listen to this man! There is a giant Marlin and Ruger #1 vacuum system in place at his residence, ruining the chance for anyone else in a 5 state area to even remotely latch on to a crumb of a rifle that might be left over! The only upside is his rifle illness MAY exceed mine. I would certainly hate to walk into a gunshop with him and find only one holy grail rifle we both wanted----I believe the resulting fiasco might make the 6 o'clock news.....021

The one I snagged. Haven't shot it yet (a character flaw I will correct in the next couple of weeks).

Thanks! That's one of the three reasons I bought it, the other two being I always wanted one of these in .35 Whelen and I am a sucker for any No. 1 with nice wood. I have had my eye out for one of the .257 Weatherby rifles, but they are hard to find with nice wood and when they are offered the guys selling them can command a premium. I let a couple get away that sometimes cause me to wake up screaming at night. The other one I wanted for a while was the 26-inch .45 70 Circassian, and I recently snagged one of those, too.

Someone else posted on one of these boards that the .45 70 No. 1 wants to have a 26-inch barrel, and my sense of things is that is a valid conclusion. Mine is a real shooter, too. This is one of the first groups (and typical of many that followed) at 50 yards using 4198 behind a 305-grain cast bullet.

I'm not going to put a scope on the .45 70. This weekend I'll shoot it at 100 yards to see how well it does there. The .45 70 is one of my favorite cartridges.
