1/2 lug GP100 collection

Everyone has their addiction and mine is to get a full collection of NIB or LNIB 1/2 lug GP100's. It appears I may have just scored on the next hardest one for me to find, and that is the 4" SS .38 Special. I now have both the blued and SS 6", the blued and SS 4" .357's, and (Assuming the sale goes through, the blued and SS 4" .38 Special. I am now down to trying to find KGPF330 which is the 3" SS .357. As far as I know they never made a blued 3". Other than CAI/LEO models, does someone know of a 1/2 lug model I may be missing? And as I have been posting in the classifieds for almost a year, if someone has a connection to that KGPF330 PLEASE let me know!

The GPF-330 is very rare as are the GP-830 and KGP-830.

I don't think the 6" was made in .38spl.

Here's what I have - matches yours pretty good Terry.

GPF160 6" blued .357
KGPF160 6" SS .357
GPF340 4" blued .357
KGPF340 4" SS .357
GPF840 4" blued .38 Special
KGPF840 4" SS .38 Special
KGPF330 3" SS .357

Again, assuming the sale goes through for the KGPF840 (4" SS .38 Special) the only thing I THINK I need is that rare KGPF330 which I will keep trying for. I agree with you they made no .38's in the 6" and 3" AND they made no blued model .357 in 3". I know they made a number of "Export" models in other configurations but I am ONLY looking for the original models that were sold to the "public". I think I listed them all but if anyone knows of an exception I would sure like to hear about it!

Hi Terry,
Where did you but all of those half lug GPs in California? I live in California too and they are hard to find. I look but never seem to score. I have a 4 inch full lug SS and my old trusty Police Service Six but the half lug GPs are eluding me. I am jealous!

Most were on "The List" at one time and have since dropped off. I manged to find some in Ca. and bring some in before they dropped off "The List". The one that was on "The List" that eluded me was the KGPF-840. That it was on "The List" would suggest that there are some in Ca.
Oh, and I'm willing to pickup a less than ANIB piece until I can upgrade, should I ever get the chance.

Terry, what are the GP and KGP 830's? I don't even show them on my list. Are they the 840's I am referring to?

Chad lists them as production models in his book. I've seen a GPF-831 on gunbroker.com, (blued 3" full lug in .38spl) but not the others. In particular, I think the GPF-830 is very rare, as is the KGPK-83O (3" half lug in .38spl). Might be better chance of finding a GPF-330 (blued 3" half lug in .357mag).
These are rare enough that I would not hold out for a NIB condition but pick one up if I found it, what ever the condition.
Of course, my problem is that they are not on the Ca. "Safe Gun List". :(

Can you tell me where I can buy "Chad's"book? I have seen it referenced many times and always skipped right over but if I want to continue to buy the 1/2 lugs maybe I need a bible for them.
 
I found another reference in the last few minutes that only had seven 1/2 lugs listed. I have that list. I don't think Ruger ever put out a 1/2 lug Blue in .357 3". If you have a specific model number for that model only PLEASE let me know what it is?

I think the number should be 8.
Blued and stainless, 357 & 38 for 3 barrel lengths except no 38 for the 6".

I wasn't even aware of the half-lug GP100's - had never seen one anywhere nor a reference to one on the internet.

So when I ran across a GP-160 (NIB) this weekend at a local gun shop (low traffic), I jumped on it, mainly because of the looks (which is great).

I don't think the shop owner realized what they had - I negotiated the price down considerably, since it appears to have been sitting in their inventory for a while, but it is NIB.

If the half-lugs are rare, what impact has anyone seen on their price/value? Specifically for the GP-160, which I'm guessing is the most common of the half-lugs. I would think their looks alone would make them desirable.

Does anyone know when the last GP-160's were produced, and are they released periodically?

Thanks for any history or info on these - there doesn't seem to be much out there.

I'd guess the KGP-160 (stainless) is more common than the GP-160 (blued).
There seems to have been a run or wharehouse cleaning of the GP-160s 2 or 3 years ago.
The half lugs have been dropped from the cataloge.
Ruger won't give out production numbers so it's hard to tell what is 'rare' and what is just 'uncommon'.

Except for a few folks who are GP-100 'nuts', there is not a lot of interest in the half lugs hence not a preimum in value at this time. It's more a case of performance than rarity. Some folks like the feel of the half lug or, in the case of the shorter barrel fixed sight versions, the lighter weight for a carry gun.

Just my $0.02 worth,

Ah.....in the eyes of the beholder! I think the 1/2 lugs are SO much prettier and hold a nicer line. Those couple of ounces can cost you as well! I don't know why people like the full lug, to be honest. Look at the RedHawks and SRH to see why the 1/2 lug is so appealing. I think Ruger did themselves a disfavor in only offering a full lug - my way or the highway type of approach and why there IS a premium!

I agree - I really like RedHawks and plan to get one soon. I guess that's why I took to the GP-160 when I saw it. Now the RedHawk will have to wait a little bit, but I'm really glad to have found something a little more unique in the GP line - won't see too many others at the range, I suspect. :)
 
I like both looks.

Take S&W for example. Most 686's are full lug (minus the 5" Dealer stocking special) whereas most 66's are 1/2 lug.

I only have one GP-100 and it's full lug.

Can you guys post pics of these fine guns ?

I will post a pic of mine shortly. I agree that I like both. I REALLY want a full lug 686 4" to use for IDPA, etc. But this weekend I was at a shop where they were asking $800 - 900 for used ones... a new one can be had for $725. I don't think used 686-5 or -6 models are worth $800+ but that's me I guess.

I prefer the look of the full lug in the GP100 SS models - same with the Smith 629 and 686. But I couldn't imagine a RedHawk or a BlackHawk with a full lug - they look great just as they are.

I would say a very limited number of those came from the factory with the new Hogue grips. Model was being dropped about the time the new grips came out. :shock:
Yours may be one of the last - what is your fired case date?

Dang, I had to run upstairs and look - I never thought to look at the date on the fired case envelop. It's Sept, 2008 - which is a lot older than I thought.

The gun shop where I got this is "quaint" and doesn't seem to move much merchandise. The box and all the papers, lock, etc were completely intact, and they had to go dig it out of the back room, so I think they just had it in inventory for a long time (?). It's in new condition, but I am surprised they had it for so long.
 
I had to go back through my records but I picked mine up new at a shop in Oct. 2007. It has the old style grips with the wood panels. Ser. No. is 174-78264. Sort of makes me wonder when the grip change occured.
Still think yours is one of the last. :D

The number on this one is 175-519xx, and I had the Ruger list of serial numbers for the GP100's with me. Based on that list, I thought this gun was late 2010, but the firing case date doesn't lie I guess.

The shop where I got it was outside of Charlotte. It's been there for years and years. I was the only customer in there on a Saturday afternoon. Every other gun shop I have been to on a Saturday lately has been a CIRCUS...
 
Just sold this one but I still have a shooter just like it. I still have NIB 4" blued and SS in .38 Special, a 3" SS .357, and a 4" SS police model bobbed hammer. I just love these guns and have VERY reluctantly began selling them off.

Maybe you could mount the barrel on a good frame? I know it isn't NIB but if it is really that rare may be worth the effort?
