Just to let all y'all know how well organized I am. This past week I decided to change the trigger shoe on my Ruger Max-9 (I didn't change any springs just the actual trigger. I really didn't like the shape of the OEM one.). I ordered the trigger from Galloway & watched the installation video. The video showed a 1/16" pin punch was needed. That's okay I have a set of them in the garage I thought.
The trigger arrived Friday but I sat it aside until Saturday morning. When I tried to install it early Saturday morning, I found the set of pin punches but couldn't locate the 1/16" one. It was almost 8:00 a.m. so I drove to the hardware store. While waiting for it to open I did a search on their website & saw they didn't have it in stock. I left there & drove to another location about 4 miles away, purchased the punch, returned home & installed the trigger.
This morning, I went to see a friend & do some shooting. While gathering everything to go see my friend I thought that I hadn't went through my range bag in a long time. Digging around in one of the side pockets I found a 1/16" pin punch. Now I'm wondering how long ago I left it in there.

I had punches in all sizes in my tool box and it just so happened I too needed a 1/16 that I couldn't find. I broke down and bought a complete set that is in and stays in one container. Kinda hard to miss it now in the tool box.

The easiest (but possibly the most expensive) way to find some lost/misplaced widget or tool is to buy a replacement. Immediately thereafter, one will find the lost object.
On an operation as large and scattered as ours, there's tremendous opportunity for things to become 'lost' or simply forgotten. It's not just 'the old guy' who forgets where things are stored or were last used and size isn't always a factor. Just a few days back, I was going to hook the big machinery trailer to the dump truck and when I got to where I thought/remembered leaving the trailer, it wasn't there. 30' long, 9' wide, and YELLOW wouldn't seem that easy to misplace????

Far less expensive than the Leatherman I replaced. Looked around for a couple months. Finally had some extra jingle and replaced it. Less than a week passed and the old one came out of hiding.

Id slipped it into a seldom used pocket in my ice fishing gear. It was attached to a retractor that was clipped on a D-ring that has always had a line nipper pliers thing on it.

I bought a full set of Craftsman punches from Sears about 50 years ago. Amazingly I still have the full set and never used one as a chisel…can't say the same for my numerous screwdrivers.
Much the same for me. 45 years ago dad said my car was a pile of crap with potential (67 Mustang GTA). As such I needed to go to Sears and get tools, he had circled a set in the news paper add. I took my pay check, probably 2 of them, and brought home a set of tools.

He was correct the car had the potential to impoverish me, and I used most of the tools. I still have most of the tools, should have kept the car.

If I spent as much time working on projects as I did looking for parts and tools I had lost/put away, I could get a lot more done! I usually trip over what I had lost after getting another one.......

I know it’s time to stop for the day when I set a tool down, perform a task, and then go to grab the tool and it’s gone. They usually return from hiding the next day…

What’s the worst is when you misplace a tool that’s part of a set…especially when the set is discontinued. I spent months looking for a particular Mac screwdriver before I found one on EBay. The original one never did turn up.

It's the damn aliens, the ones from outer space,.... they are always moving and hiding my tools and then just at the right time , or wrong depending on how you look at it, bring them back... usually where I've looked several times.

I gave up on tape measures. I can round them all up and put them where they belong in the shop. 16 ft Stanley is my favorite and I'll be damned, 5 were on the shelf last week and now there is none. Just bought a half dozen from Amazon and guess what, 3 months later I have one left.
