The million-dollar question — quite literally — when it comes to “bring your own power” projects is whether the project plans to eventually connect with the existing power grid or remain an island unto itself, Sen. Cale Case, R-Lander, told Cowboy State Daily.

“When their power is not working, do they rely on the grid or not?” he asked.

If not, they would be a “different animal” than most, Case said, in terms of potential impact on the price customers could be paying for energy.

While the rhetoric all sounds good, it’s something that has to be watched, Case said, and it’s something he will only believe when he sees it, because it’s easy to make such promises in advance of construction.

If they do connect to the grid, then the question becomes what happens if their own power generation comes up short.

“Do they buy power from Black Hills Energy?” Case asked. “Will other customers be protected in that transaction?”

That means Cheyenne will also become a ICBM target for China. Congratulations. :oops:

Oh, and btw the only "winner" in the AI race will be AI. :eek:

They already proved that everyone can work from home.

They can put these electric power black holes anywhere on the planet, and connect them to the rest of the world with fiber optic cables.

Put them all in some desolate corner of outer mongolia, and let the mongolians pay for power plants to run them.

It appears in scheduling and monitoring tools, route optimisation software and automated performance dashboards – all systems that decide who gets what shift, how long a task should take and whether someone is performing at their maximum capacity. In these workplaces, AI is not something you use. It is something that watches and rules you.

That is the new divide we should all be paying attention to.

A third of UK employers are already using “bossware” technology to monitor workers’ online activity. This already prevalent worker surveillance is a glimpse of what is yet to come.

This is why the question of whether AI is “good” or “bad” is pointlessly crude. The truth is more nuanced. Employers are using AI to empower some workers while subjecting others to more intensive, inhumane forms of oversight. It is creating new opportunities at the top of the labour market while tightening control lower down.

And further down the line, the same methods of algorithmic management and surveillance that are being honed in warehouses, delivery vans and gig work platforms are likely to spread to corporate headquarters, hospitals and schools. We’re already seeing this at companies including Amazon, as its software engineers say they’re being surveilled and pressured to use AI to achieve more productivity, even when it counterintuitively slows them down. And Meta plans to track and capture its employees’ keystrokes, mouse movements and clicks to train its AI models. Some of the same workers benefiting from the rise of AI now are poised to eventually lose that advantage.

My own research over the past decade on worker-AI coexistence, which was cited in the 2024 White House economic report, suggests that the most pressing issue about AI’s impact on work is not immediate mass unemployment. It is the widening gap in skills, autonomy and wellbeing between those who get to work with AI and those who are finding themselves managed by it. Many jobs will remain in the future, but they will be more pressured, more fragmented and less human.

That matters because work is not just about income. It is also about dignity, trust and control.

During the pandemic, many people became acutely aware of how deeply work affects mental wellbeing. AI-managed workplaces are only intensifying the pressures of work. When every click, step, call or pause a worker makes can be measured and graded by a system that they cannot fully see or challenge, the effect is stress.

For people in warehousing, retail, hospitality, logistics, customer service or the gig economy, it can mean being pushed harder by systems that are presented as neutral, objective or efficient, even when they are anything but.

This is not just a technical problem. It is a social, political and moral one.

They already have in lab experiments and at least one 'in the wild' has hacked into a separate AI system. Not quite the same as 'banding together', but that's well within reach. In fact, "Autonomous Teaming" is something the US military, and likely other nations, are energetically pursuing.

Here's where we are now, and the future don't look good. We carbon based life forms are loosing control of our monster.

I hav never been the sharpest tool in the shed. But with all these data centers being built everywhere, what happens when the power blinks or goes off? With the demand they supposedly use, would take a GollyWhopper of a backup generator. And are they goin to hav backup water source? Been kinda thinkn bout this. Big one under construction now in Ark. Another about to start on LR. And a huge one just S border in LA
 
They have significant back up power. Some have gas turbine setups. And while these are as fast as a traditional ICE powered generator to start, they have huge battery backup systems to catch the drop. As to water, the systems consist of both closed and open loop systems. The open loop systems can be allowed to cycle up considerably to allow for the lack of significant makeup. That and on site water storage tanks can handle the load for quite some time.

Like power systems water system operators can (although not as easily or rapidly) shunt water to those customers they determine to be "important". Important means those willing to pay for it. Data center operators have very deep pockets. And don't expect the government to step in and demand water go to residential consumers over data centers. The local governments rely on those data centers.

For "reasons" I "can't" explain, just take a deep dive into a large data center located in the capital city of my state. The information is out there, and it's not all that hard to find.
 
The new AI center in Richland Parish is currently the largest construction site int he world. That was before they started the power plant construction to support it. The site ran 3.8 miles long along Louisiana 183. Now, with the construction of the power plants, that construction has increased along 183 south all the way to Holly Ridge school which sits on the intersection of 183 and Highway 80. Can’t go any further south unless they want to reroute the highway and the East/West Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas mainline of the UP.

Here’s the kicker. The Powerplants, as I understand it are not owned or part of META. They are owned by Entergy (used to be LP&L) which is the company that provides electricity for much of Louisiana (as well as sister power companies providing power to Arkansas and I believe Mississippi.)

So, who is paying for the two new power plants? Take a guess, and if you don’t guess the customers of Entergy, you are WRONG!

I thought it would be the perfect place to use one of the new micro Nuclear power plants, but who am I when compared to a company that has almost a monopoly on power in Louisiana.

And though I am a member of the conservative party, I’ve never been a big fan of any of the governors who have been elected in our state. The current man speaks highly of the new construction jobs and the new permanent jobs that this center will provide for Richland Parish. The mantra, we need more jobs more industry has been quoted by almost every governor and state wide politician in Louisiana since I’ve been alive.

Trying to keep this apolitical.

What this means is that people who live in rural areas, live in rural areas because they WANT to live in rural areas. This is not a poverty issue because it actually takes more income to live in a rural area then in a city of town. They don’t need more jobs and more industry in rural areas, in the cities, yes, but leave us country people alone. We live rural because we like rural, having a 5 mile long industrial plant with hundreds of people coming and going each day and stores and businesses surrounding to support the people coming and going IS NOT RURAL.

In the end, bragging about bringing more jobs and more industry to a rural agricultural centered area, is not something to brag about. Most consider it rather insulting. And seeing all the comments made by the people who live in this area reinforce it.

If I get kicked out because of this, so be it. Not trying to be vicious or vindictive, the META center is a done deal, property originally belonged to the heir of one of the first settlers of Holly Ridge, but in the end, I suppose its better than a car factory which the land was originally sold for to have built.

All of the internet runs from servers.

Data centers have been with us for decades. The only thing new is manufactured hysteria.

Manufactured hysteria brought us the covid fiasco, and the same devious machinations are now fomenting hysteria over the Iran war. Stir up the unwashed masses enough, stop funding national defense, then the psycho mullahs will be lobbing nukes hither and yon
 
I'm still wondering why AI and data centers suddenly became a "thing."
The loud left (treehuggers, experts on wildflowers, butterflies, birdies, and desert tortoisies, nimby, watersavers, anti-gummint conspiranoids, et.c.) made a lot of scared noises about the NSA data center before it went up next to camp williams (agwgw) near salt lake city, about how it would wreak havoc with the valley's water supply and hogging the powergrid, and not a peep since. Others proposed elsewhere now claim the local temperatures would raise 5-15 degrees, (and dont specify c° or f°) plus stealing regional groundwater and disrupting The Grid.
