Well, I swore I never would put a red dot on a pistol (although I have no problems with them on rifles). But, to find out what all the hub bub was about I ordered a cheap (and I mean cheap!) one off of Amazon and put it on my 22/45MK4. I had a heckuva time finding the dot shooting off hand. I won't be putting one on my carry gun anytime soon. But, I will say this. I have never been real accurate with this gun, but I shot the target (while sighting it in) while kneeling on one knee and resting the pistol over my range bag! I got two MK2s (not22/45) that I can shoot 3 times as good as this gun, but this is by far the best target I have shot with it. It's just a range toy and the red dot is just something new to play with.

They do work. I've had one on my High Standard for more than 20 years, and I did go cheap. Mine is a Tasco, and it still works just fine. Don't think I would ever put one on a carry gun, but for range work and casual shooting they work great.
 
You should be able to see your iron sights in the lower red dot window if mount is correct.

Line up sights as usual and quickly transition to the red dot. Should help you out on aligning red dot to target.

Your red dot is mounted to high on the gun. Get it lower to the bore axis, on the same plane as your iron sights, and you will be much faster.

I have always just preferred open sights on my handguns but I have cataract surgery in my future and I'm thinking I will probably have to make some changes.

Perhaps, but OP mentioned that he had a hard time finding the dot and I offered a solution to that end 🤷‍♂️
 
Dots can be a help. But as the OP has discovered,, "finding the dot" can be an issue sometimes.

I see shooters all the time searching for the dot during competition. It's USUALLY because they do not use a repeatable gripping method. Once you get a repeatable & proper grip,, the dot seems to appear easily.
But as noted,, the higher mounting can cause this to be a bit different as well.

The lower mounting,, along with what is called a "co-witness" optic where you can see the open sights as well, can really assist in things.

But in general,, there is a learning curve to them. When I watch new folks trying one,, most often,, I see that they are pointing the gun "muzzle up" a bit. And by simply lowering the muzzle, they find the dot.
 
They are the way to go IMO.
A large, and ever increasing number of my handguns now have red dot sights.
I'm getting up there, and my vision just isn't what it used to be.
 
I know my optic is a bit high, but I did not want to fully commit to the red dot, just wanted to try it out. With the pic rail that came with the gun, and the optic's ability to mount to it, it was perfect for what I wanted. Like I said, just trying it out, getting used to it, and the 22/45 seemed a perfect excuse for trying it. The only guns I have that can direct mount a red dot are my two RXMs, but I may mount one to the one I don't carry as much just to see. But I doubt if I will ever feel comfortable enough to carry my EDC with one.
 
I’ve never had a red dot on a handgun but I have had one on my slug gun for about 30 years and it’s ideal for the thick woods in which I hunt whitetails. Now I may have to add one to my Mk. IV. I know it’s drilled and tapped from the factory since I had to loctite the darn filler screws to keep them from backing out.
 
It’s my first red dot got a holsun 407 price have come down since I bought but I am having fun either way i never shot my cz sp01 better . I been training myself to open both eyes it help find the dot faster

That looks good, I’ve been thinking of doing that to my 23/45 also. Very tempting. But I’m an old dog myself so, maybe.
