I'm certain some of y'all may have expertise on this. I have a 1" leather sling. Very nice old Ruger one. Going on a beautiful 30-06. Do I order the 1" sling swivels, or the 1.25" swivels? Do I want the swivel to be the same width as the sling, or is the additional 1/4" better or worse?

Measure the sling and get swivels that fit.

Are the swivels a good brand, or of Chinese origin? You want the sling to ride within the ring and not rub where the ring's curves fold to keep from damaging the leather over time.

Good brand swivels allow either 1" or 1-1/4" slings to ride correctly within the curves of the rings and not rub the edges of the leather, so it's mainly an individuals choice and I see nothing wrong with getting either size.

Uncle Mikes 1 1/4" for $12 at the local Ace hardware. I will buy the American ones locally. I just was unsure if the extra 1/4" might be too much "wiggle room" and cause unnecessary wear on the leather by add chaffing. I was assuming that it would be ok. Just figured I'd ask prior to purchase. 1st rifle since the military a few decades ago.

It seems that many swivels have plastic parts, knobs and pins. Which all metal swivels do folks use. Pretty sure Uncle M's have plastic, at least current ones.

It's common for a leather sling to develop cracks where the leather folds over the swivel. That will happen way before any sort of "chaffing" will become evident....
As for "which width", I've always bought swivels to fit the sling....I guess a 1" set up would be OK for a light weight .22, and I do realize that the M1-Carbine used a 1" sling. Still though, a serious rifle needs a serious sling set up.

I actually use plastic swivels, I’ve had them on my Sako 30.06 since 1996. I get tired of the metal ones when they start squeaking halfway through a hunt. I’ve never had the plastic make a sound or have had one break. To each their own if you like metal. I’ve used a couple different brands of plastic but the current ones they sell are these, you can find them at MidWay USA usually for a lower price if they’re in stock.

If a 1" sling, use 1" swivels. There is no benefit to having slop there.
