Thanks much, Tyrone. Randy said much the same thing, so I will leave it be. Randy also warned me about getting the steel wool too close to the alu frame and cyl. I will leave this one alone, put a bit better grip frame on it. I have done a bit of research, and I think it has the proper loading gate on it. The latch should be a double slotted one iI think, I have one in my parts box. I also have a flatgate if I find it should have one.

I got it back together. The end of the barrel has some pitting on it,

I have a new model Super Single-six, 4 5/8 inch bbl in blued steel and love it. I had a couple of 0ld models that I sold and wish I hadn't, but I'm old enough I probably won't bite the bullett to buy another.

The ejector rod housing is in amazing condition, especially considering the other side of the barrel. Is the housing steel?

I put a nicer looking erh on it. I had a steel short throw with the correct screw/rod. The original I still have, it looked like it had some pitting. I can't remember where I got this one. I have several, short throw and long throw, 2 with concave ejector rod, one with serrated rod, 2 or 3 with later rod. I may work on the original a bit and put it back on.

You probably already know there are 3 different steel housings: shortest throw, short throw and straight slot housings, although not all used by the factory on single sixes of course.

I didn't know the terminology. I just called them short, long and full throw. The short is used on single six, the long on BH, and the full was the final on all models. If I am wrong please correct me. Thanks, Hondo.

The short throw was used on Type 1 & Type 2 guns with the change to the long throw creating the Type 3. Type 4 is the same long throw housing as T3 but with a dimpled button.
On the light weights I believe all had the long throw ERH

Jay, you may not always be right, but you are never wrong!!! I just went and pulled the original out and looked at it, it is a long throw, as is the one I put on it. It has the flat er button, I assume that is correct for a '57. I did some further research into the loading gate, and the contoured is correct for this time frame. I also have the type 1-2 base pin latch in my parts kit which I think is correct for this time frame. Thanks for everyone's help and input. Us beginners needs all we can get!!

I edited in about the color. I think it is created by the flash. Under naturel light it looks like alu.
I thought the dimpled rod would be correct, I have 2 so I can swap it.
Did the lite weights ever have alu loading gates? I have 5, 4 are for Colt New Frontier I think. the 5th one doesn't have the nubbin at the top as thr single six doesn't. It is alu.

No, never seen a Ruger aluminum loading gate. I don't know of any Colt alum loading gates either. I wonder if it's an after market replacement for a Ruger. But not the Premier brand, the few I've seen are steel.
I believe that is the faded version of the "Martin Coating) 0f the 'tri' colors, then the next model aluminum cylinders were "blackened" ( darkened) and it was called "Japanning"??? like an "INKING"?? we never could figure out quite "How" to do and do it properly back when we were refinishing these with my friend Walter, and he was a graduate of the Trinidad ,Co., gunsmithing school, long ago,....he;s in his 80s now, and they closed up the shop a few years ago when Skip V., here in Mentor, OH. passed and all of Walts stuff is in storage, sad I miss working with him, but these days neither of us is doing real well....:(

I have 4 of them, the gates I mean. And 1 that is made like the single six. doing some research to see if I can find anything on the single six lite weight.

Like Hondo,, I didn't know about any alloy loading gates. I'm pretty sure Ruger never used any alloy loading gates.

I think I answered my own question. After looking at the gates again, the alloy gate with the nubbin is on the left in the photo. The Ruger ss steel gate is in the middle. Note the length of the mounting stub, alloy is shorter than the steel. I have no idea what the alloy gate on the right is off of, definitely not Ruger. And after much research, I can find no mention of alloy loading gates used by Ruger.

The kit from jusbadd came in today. The base pin fit perfectly! I put an early base pin latch on it, as well as a dimpled ejector rod from my parts kit. I think I have it back to as shipped, as far as the features go. The finish is not bad for a 70 year old shooter...........
This is what I had wanted to use for background, but the images covered up too much of this beautiful piece of history...........

Your LW needs the trigger from the kit I sent also. Should be the thin curved trigger. Also, to answer your aluminum loading gate question it's a very, very good chance that it is from a Colt Scout. The Scouts had aluminum receivers as opposed to their brothers the New Frontier Scouts which were steel. Picture for reference. Nice looking LW by the way. Looks like the "black" coating that Ruger used to cover over the Martin Hardcoating (green looking LW Cylinders) is wearing off adnd showing a bit "green/gold" - Looks cool and I like it. Your doing good.

Now, how about building a Custom 4 5/8" Flatgate Single-Six? As you can tell I like the 4 5/8" barrel single-sixes. It has the real deal "tooth" grips also. Thought you might want to take a look. The blue one started as a standard Flatgate 5 1/2" and the colorful one was just as yours - but this one was missing alot of the anodizing from the frame. So, I had the receiver anodized a "purple" and had the barrel blued... Of course a couple different looks with aluminum cylinders. I hope @JAYDAWG doesn't get mad about the original Flatgate :)
