SR1911 Talo Night Watchman 10MM

Finally came in from the online distributor yesterday. I went with this Talo edition because it was the only all blue 1911 Ruger offers.

The provided grips in my opinion are hideous and weird feeling. I put several sets of grips on, and settled for a set of Magpuls. There is thumb recess, which will take some getting used to since my 1911 grip is a high thumb. I replaced the hex head grip screws with slotted.

The trigger style doesn't appeal to me either. Not sure what look they were going for...Punisher skull or Jack-o-Lantern. It feels "ok". Slight travel to the wall which is a bit gritty, break is crisp. Reset is "ok". I have a 3 hole Videki trigger on the way.

I don't want to sound too negative but I don't care for the hammer style either. The hammer and sear engagement is very crisp however. When I gut it to replace/fit the trigger I will decide then if I will throw a custom sear/disconnector/hammer package in. If so I will go with a commander ring hammer.

I prefer arched mainspring housings so that will be replaced as well. Have a Hogue G10 checkered on the way.

The sights are nice. I like Novak sights a lot. The thumb safety is very crisp with loud positive clicks on/off. Grip safety is a little spongy, sear spring can be hand adjusted a bit for that. Slide to frame fit is nice.

I was considering possibly using this as my house gun. However I prefer a WML and the frame is not railed.

Overall It is a nice pistol. I was cleared to drive short distances this past MON so maybe I will get it to the range next week and see how it runs. Soon as I have it completely "personalized" I will add more pics.

That will look really nice when you finish it. I'm with you on the true ring hammer. The squashed looking hammer that's so popular with 1911's don't do anything for me.

Received the goodies from Brownell's today. The face lift procedure starts tomorrow.

Gutted the SR1911 10MM today....wow does Ruger use A LOT of grease on the sear/disconnector! I've torn down hundreds of 1911s over the years and never found this much gunk on components. The sear/disconnector were buried in the stuff and needed to be unburied.

I like a traditional look with 1911's. As stated above those grip panels, trigger and hammer had to go.

The new commander ring style hammer went in with minimal fitting (I kept the factory sear/thumb safety).

The trigger went in also with less than typical filing/stone work, and has no vertical or horizontal play. Need to fiddle with the reset though. It's slightly heavy but should break in to a nice 3.5 to 4lbs which is fine with me.

The new main spring housing did not arrive yet so I had some old USGI arched on hand and rebuilt one with the Ruger components.

I will run a ton of rounds through it and determine if I am going to replace anything else, but I'm happy with it as is for now.

Looking forward to some range time. I'm not quite recovered from surgery yet to drag target stands around. So I will most likely just rattle off a few boxes at the 25yd steel targets. The thumb index will need some getting used to...I'm conditioned to a high thumb.

This is interesting the completely diverse tastes in such pistols.
I agree, the grips are not for me, but are easily swapped for Government panels, which are my favorite. But the rest of the pistol is exactly what I prefer.

Yes the 1911 is one of those guns you can personalize to your preferred liking. There are so many options available depending on your intended use. All the 1911's in my collection tend to favor a certain traditional look. I have one that is just plain as issued, a couple I customized as close as possible to the Army Delta pistol and Marine MEUSOC pistol, a Commander size with a bit of 80s/90's style and this 10MM as seen here. Hopefully I can build a few more. I would love to build up a long slide 38 Super.

This one is pretty accurate. Have a friend that is a retired SF COL and he loves it.....but he's a Staccato fan now.



MUESOC Pistol:

I saw these come through the Range during Desert Shield and loved them. This one is almost there but not 100%. They were issued with a straight mainspring housing with a loop. All I had on hand was a USGI arched with no loop. Some Marines had them switched though. I prefer arched and I shoot this one the most so arched will stay. Most of these pistols were issued with a three hole trigger, I did see some with solid and that's what I had on hand. I will probably keep it this way. Also they were issued with a ambi extended thumb safety. I'm going to add that but I do have an extended safety I will fit/install soon.



Hoping to get the SR1911 10MM out very soon to see how it runs with the mods.

All of my 10's have (others should have) a pretty stout mainspring maybe it will not whack the beavertail (BT) on firing. On my supers and .45's unless the BT has had a serious cut in it to allow clearance of the hammer they always have whacked it.

I ditched the factory recoil spring and replaced with a 23lb. The Ruger factory felt like a average 18 lb. I'm sticking with the factory 23lb main spring for now. I will see how it does with Blazer 200gr and then throw some 180gr Buffalo Bore just for kicks. I have some of the grail Norma that I watched destroy a early Colt Delta Elite...but that is staying on the shelf. For now.
As far as the ring hammer I fit/installed hitting the Wilson Combat Beavertail I fit/installed there is no possible way. For one it is grooved, and part of the safety check sequence when fitting a beavertail is to check clearance with hammer of choice in full cock. You really only need to worry about spur hammers hitting a quality Beavertail these days but who keeps a spur hammer with a beavertail? Back in the day they bobbed spur hammers but today it isn't much of a concern as they are grooved. There is no excuse for "whacking" anymore.

So you know there are some Norma "factory duplication" loads using AA 9 out there if hot is your thing :-)

Correct. More than likely no Norma will be fed through this. I don't really have the need. Even the BB will be fed sparingly on a as needed basis. The hot stuff is mostly for my G40.

I like the changes you made. I also like the MUESOC gun. I just bought a m45a1. It’s neat they held onto the 1911 so long but all good things come to an end.

That 10 looks awesome, those factory skins are horrible.

Thanks. I'm assuming you bought the Colt clone? It's pretty accurate to the original. If you bought a used one and it has the USMC marking it's worth some coin. USMC blasted Colt for it. They are nice, I just prefer more traditional/original. I always liked Pachmayr grips and when I saw the the MUESOC pistols come across the range during Desert Shield I wanted one. You can piece them together like I am, but one of the original USMC Armorers from Quantico (Nick Wasley) owns Valor Precision and he will build you a 100% parts accurate pistol. Also Alchemy Custom Weaponry will build one 100% parts accurate....both are way too much for me to justify. MAC partnered with TISAS and have a pretty dang accurate looking MUESOC clone.....for under $700 bucks (much less than I have in mine) you can have it in your hands withing a week. I seen some reviews, and if you don't mind import 1911's it's a pretty good deal. I was tempted, but already had the SAI base pistol like the original.

BTW there are still 1911's in service with some units....however the 2011 type Staccato gets most of the love now.

Thanks. Yeah they are not to my liking. I bet they would peel apart eventually. Hoping to get some rounds downrange tomorrow...curious how the new panels handle.

Funny you mentioned the Pachmyr grips. Last week I found a similar set in a junk bin at a LGS I put them on my sons Colt. It changes the whole personality of the gun.

Made it to the range yesterday......report on the SR1911 10MM upgrades coming soon....

As stated I finally made it to the range. Still recovering from lower back/sacrum surgery and pretty stiff. Seabee Son is home on transfer leave and tagged along. I had intended to just blow off a box at the 25yd steel plates but he wanted to play with the M9, M18 and M4. Since he was here to help pack I brought a AK47 that had not been fired yet. Even put some rounds through my carry gun. It was a great fall day and had the handgun range, rifle range and carbine range all to ourselves for 99% of the day. I was exhausted. Hoping to get the Mini 14 out this week and zero in that Leupold RDS.

Back on topic, my SR1911 10MM "rebuild". It ran flawlessly....I only brought one box of rounds. Magtech 180 gr @ 1230 FPS. Even with that, it was more snappy than I would have thought for a all steel gun. My G40 is very pleasant even with Corbon, Underwood and Buffalo Bore. I wish I had saved the SR for last, but was anxious to see how it ran and was throwing 10MM at the steel plates within a couple minutes of parking the Jeep.

It was snappy. Not terrible to manage by any means but I'm not too thrilled with the grip panels I put on. They feel great when handling the pistol. When shooting the pistol it moves a bit as the grips are a bit thinner, and the front strap is smooth. I'm half way inclined to throw on some Pachmayr wrap arounds.

I spent most of the box banging steel as I just wanted to ensure it functioned reliably with the mods. Every trigger pull had a report of steel until I got cocky and tried the small 5" plates. The front sight practically covered them at 25yds. My Son tried it and fired off a magazine. A bit snappier than the M9 and M18 he was drilling with. He had a clean 15 yard target left so I put the last 7 rounds into it. All in all I'm happy with the changes, both looks and reliability. Lots more different rounds to try out. I have several different brands.

The back was stiff and couldn't really keep good form......obviously I kept well fed during my recovery :p I've been walking more and more but need to stick to my diet the remaining five weeks before going back to work...I hate diet bourbon :rolleyes::LOL:
