GP-161 questions!

Hi Everyone,

I just picked up a GP-100. The box says GP-161 on it. It is a 6” blued gun, looks unfired with box, papers and everything! Serial number dates it to 2015. Most of the GP-100’s that I have seen are stainless. Are these guns rare(er)? Why does the box say GP-161 instead of GP-100? I am way more familiar with Colts and Smiths and not as knowledgable on Ruger double action revolvers. (Although I do have a few)! Any info/opinions would be appreciated.

It is just how Ruger makes the model number tell the story of what it is. Your pistol is a GP-100 in general terms. If there is a "K" before the GP on the model that means the gun is stainless. Ruger uses "K" on a lot of different guns for that. Then the number, 161 means it is a 6 inch barrel. I have a KGP-141. So mine is stainless with a 4 inch barrel. Then there is a special run of KGPP-141, and KGP-151, etc.
 
The box says KGP-161 which designates a stainless GP-100 with 6" barrel and full length underlug.
If your gun is blue you have the wrong box.
 
That isn't my box. I never posted the gun or the box, I just asked the question! I definitely have the correct box for the gun I got:

I have a KGP 161 that I bought in the late 80's I think. It was my first duty gun as a Deputy. Great gun, but in a training senerio we did a Hogans Alley night shoot. This was back before low flash powder. The fireball was about 15' and the concussion in the confined space, even with earpro was completely overwhelming. I couldn't see and was completely out of the fight. Glock had just released the 10mm and I have a month one of production. I repeated the shoot with entirely different results. I have been a 10mm guy every since. And yes I have many in Rugers.

I've just discovered the .44 special cartridge, kinda nice to shoot.

I am a fan of the 44 special. I have four of them in different mix and models. These three are Ruger‘s. Two GP and 1KNVB Vaquero. The blue GP is a Jeff Quinn special. The KGP-4431 is. 3” that my 18yo grandson loves to shoot. Mostly my hand loads and are not wimpy loads. They give a good solid pushback instead of the sharp jolt for the 44 magnum. The GP is becoming one of my favorite handguns, regardless of caliber.
