I have been looking for grips for some older Ruger’s and ran across red eagle repro’s. I remember seeing some but do not know much about them. When were they used? What models?

Red Eagles are the early production of the Ruger .22 Standards and Mark I's.
Starting with SN#1 to SN#35,029 with 9 variants during the production.
The side emblem on them has a red background but when Alex Sturm died in 1952 Bill Ruger changed the emblem from red to black in his honor.

no it is NOT a "background" that is red in the original medallions, the eagle was painted red and the side ,around the eagle was actually a silver, ,and the first ones were two piece, glued?? or pressed together.....
on the 50th anniversary guns of 1999, they reversed this and made the background, around the eagle, red..........

Thank you- I thought it had something to do with a death.
The change after Alex Sturm's death is correct, as is Rugerguy's information.

As mentioned the original red eagle medallions were two piece brass (the disc and the stem). The stem was brazed to the back of the disc and the eagle was enameled in red. This type can be found into the 9xxx range. Then Ruger went to the one piece medallion which had a very thin disc portion to it... so thin that upon staking the medallion on the back to secure it to the grip, the stem most often would try to push through the eagle's breast on the side. So original red eagle medallions of this time more often than not show cracked or missing paint in the center of the eagle. This medallion lasted well after Ruger began painting them black.

The 50th and 70th anniversary also had the red background but not the 75th. The NRA edition also had the red background.

The very first pistol grips with the red background medallion was the stainless Signature Series pistol from 1982.
yessir, as I too was corrected by my wife from her display back in 1982, which she called "the first and the last" two matched serial number RSTs in the #3100 range, now she would have to call it the first and the 'latest' at THAT time, in 1982.......
