I'm new to firearms. What's preferred, Hoppes or Ballistol ( or something else) ?
you will now get 24,000 different opinions...(in time, the next few days)

that being said, i use Hoppes 9, and other times i use Kroil

Kroil has a powerful odor, so i have a fan running in the back ground, but it does a good job of loosening some of the lead/copper in the barrel, since i do shoot a lot of lead reloads.

it's a matter of preference, some use Ballistol as well of course, but i cannot find that locally here

i get Hoppes by the quart online, and Kroil by the gallon on line as well

only small bottles of Hoppes is locally, and for the amount i use, a quart goes a longer way.

Opinion #3 .....
Clean with Hoppes....
Oil with Kroil....
Grease with Shooters Choice Synthetic Syringe

( Try not to over-lube a clean gun....just a dab on the shiny contact metal parts )

Hoppes 9 does not damage metal if left on. If that was true every gun in my safe would be ruined. To the contrary.....all my guns are rusy free look amazing and function well. There is a reason that product has been around for so long! Also am i the only one that loves the smell of #9?

Back in the Day it was Hoppe's and gun oil. Oh I miss the smell of the old Hoppe's. Takes me back 65 years. Hickok45 got me into Ballistol and then I came across a YT video studying a large number of oils and I switch to Clenzoil. Hoppe's is fast but caustic. You can use Ballistol and Clenzoil on metal, rubber, wood, plastic, leather, ect and not cause damage. Not caustic and doesn't cause She Who Must be Obeyed to go Postal about the odor of Hoppe's. But they take longer and sometimes more effort to work. But as stated above all this stuff works. You have to be more careful with some than others.

Everyone has an opinion. If I was in a constant combat situation, I'd probably clean my handgun daily BUT I'M NOT so I don't. At times I'm probably closer to 'casual' in my cleaning schedule. Unless the gun is exposed to bad weather (unlikely for a carry pistol) or dust storm ((extremely unlikely) or dropped in sand/mud/snow, I'm not cleaning it and certainly not dis-assembling for cleaning. I'm guessing my current carry pistol has been dis-assembled for cleaning twice in 4 years and one of those times was during the first 100 rounds. Still works as needed.
Even my old trapline pistol that IS exposed to weather/mud/nasty conditions only gets cleaned if/when it malfunctions (which is close to NEVER).

I use Hoppe's with a wire brush and then clean cotton pads until done, and Ballistol or another CLP for the rest of the gun and magazines. Works for me and I have never had a rust problem on any of my guns. Plus I really like the smell of Hoppe's #9. Everytime I use it I think of my Dad cleaning his guns, and he's been gone almost 50 years.

I have been using Hoppes for over half a century and other products, Wipeout foam is great on used or filthy gun bores, if you want to learn about lubes and metal protection this is a very informative read from about ten years ago. I have been using some of these products that support his findings with excellent results.
