Got a new SR1911 the other day.

I did notice that when I put the safety on, it stops about half way on and picks up some resistance. In this position:

the gun won't fire, but it hasn't travelled far enough to engage the detent. If I push past the resistance, the safety will go all the way up, and it does engage the detent fully.

I'm concerned that I won't notice that the safety isn't fully engaged and it will slip off unnoticed since the detent isn't engaged.

Any ideas?

Poor fitting. An armorer-grade 1911 mechanic can probably correct this assuming the safety itself isn't way out of spec. Of course you could always call Ruger for a shipping label.

Either way, I wouldn't carry it like that. It'd probably be a good idea to pull the left grip and make sure the plunger tube is flush and tight. That's another potential source of problems with the thumb safety.

We are talking about a defective safety device on a brand new gun, right?....Personaly, I'd be getting ahold of Ruger ASAP.
