OP was off by one year. .44 Mag was introduced in 1956 and that is where the serial # 55 is on the ruger serial # list.

So how man of the previous 54 Blackhawk 44 magnums have been seen?
I have seen and know the owner of s/n 5 and this coming weekend (Jan 20-21) at a gun show in Huntsville, AL I will be seeing s/n 16 owned by the same gentleman.
