WTB: 77/50 209 conversion

Interesting. I purchased a similar rifle two years ago. It was original and I read all the poop about the conversions and why the conversion might be necessary.
I have many antique cartridge rifles and original caplocks and use black powder exclusively in them. I have fired my 77/50 about fifty times now with #11 caps and have never had a fail to fire or a hesitation in firing. I use only FFG Swiss black powder. My thoughts are that the problem lies with BP substitutes and pellets of BP substitute. There is no indication as to why the poster is seeking the conversion. Just my thoughts....it may be simpler to just use BP? Dave

I bought a 77/50 that had been converted, couldn't get it to shoot consistently so changed it back and now have a flawless shooting inline black powder rifle now...I may have done something wrong but I just could not get it to shoot well with the 209's no matter what powder I used...not trying to persuade anybody, but Ruger did a good job when they made my 77/50 and it is a shooter as it came from the factory...

To each his own!!! I also believe Ruger had it right but BP substitutes are the problem. I tried them but found the substitutes were much harder to clean up. Dave

I have changed my 77/50's to musket caps and have never had a problem. Ruger sells the breech plug kit for the conversion. I use 777 and it works flawlessly.

I appreciate the info, I have shot my 77/50 with the 209 conversion for a few years now with no misfires. My wife also has a 77/50 without the conversion and she also has not had any misfires both using BP. The 209 conversion seems to have a quicker ignition than the #11 caps, She has shot both and likes the 209 better.
