Watching one of those Boot Hill openings on Gunsmoke today. Dillon talked about innocent people getting killed and he said "Makes you wish that nobody was allowed to carry a gun, maybe some day they won't be".

I never thought I'd hear that coming out of my hero Dillon's mouth.

In the days of the Earps at the OK corral, folks weren't allowed to go armed within the "city" of Tombstone. The Earps and Doc attempting to disarm the Clantons set off the famous shootout. At least, that was the story.

The progressives always tried to eliminate the carrying of guns in public as a sign of "civilization".

The town fathers of Lawrence KS during the Civil War also mandated that all guns in town be kept in a central repository. Confederates raided the town, butchered many of the men, robbed and burned at will, and rode off w/o a loss.

The Oshkosh Wisconsin city museum had a colt navy and holster that was taken off Cole Younger for vagrancy just before the Northfield raid. The daughter of the police chief donated it to the museum. In the flap of the holster was burnt engraved, To Cole Younger from Maj Quantrill. I seen the gun and holster a number of times. Then the museum had a fire. When they reopened it I went home and asked the curator about the gun. He didn't know what I was talking about. A old secretary overheard me and said she recalled the gun. She said they used to have a picture postcard they used to sell in the gift shop of it. She went to storage and got me one. Through the years I have misplaced it. If I ever relocate it I will post it. When I asked the curator what they done with the gun he just shrugged his shoulders and said it must be in storage somewhere. I later read the holster was destroyed in the fire. Article didn't say what happened to the colt navy.

Dillon wasn't very politically correct in Dodge. He had no compunctions about pistol whipping someone. A couple episodes ago, he was taking care of some trouble maker and he drew his gun and whacked him across the puss with it. The guy didn't drop fast enough so he followed through with another backhand pistol barrel to the puss.

I'm surprised his gun was so accurate after the number of people he smacked in the puss with that barrel. :mrgreen:

Maybe he found out that the double smack straightened the barrel back the other way.

I saw that episode this morning, and had the same feeling.

Dillon was ruminating sadly about all the dead guys while standing in a phony graveyard that looked like it had been built by Ed Wood. In this case the medium really was the message...
