I guess I am but I don't feel like it. Coworker mentioned last Friday there was a raffle to raise funds for a family that lost a toddler to brain cancer. Tickets $20 each or three for $50 so I bought six. I won the drawing which got me a sizable gift certificate to a gun shop 30 minutes north I have never been to before. Turns out the grandparents (my age, Oklahoma after all) are acquaintances of mine as I coached their now 22 year old son in little league at age 7. Weird, huh?

Kinda feel guilty but I am going up there this morning to spend my free money. No idea what they have pre-owned or consignment but for new stuff I might just look into a sporting clay shotgun. Two weeks ago I used my home defense 12 gauge (swapped the 18" heat shield barrel for a the 26" modified choke barrel) gun show pump to start off 23 or 26 for my first time shooting clays ever. After 99 shots (FTF on one due to a non-chamber) my arm was trying to fall off.

Unsure of the reliability of semis these days for $1K or so but I fell like I need less recoil to shoot 100 in a morning. I like the idea of an over/under but it won't be useful for anything else and felt recoil has got to be the same as a pump. They all cost too much but I have a head start with the raffle winnings.

I actually had four stations where the second shell refused to chamber after hitting the first clay but I was able to get the second in and off and make a hit on the second clay. I since detail cleaned and deburred the $100 Maverick and treated it to my grease and oil treatment so it might not hiccup as much if I ever shoot targets with it again.

I kinda hope there's a nice vintage Ruger instead. Still feels weird.

Already back home and with a new to me Remington 1100 in 12 gauge with a 30" vent rib barrel, checkered wood, engraved receiver and bolt, and large butt pad. I have $222 in it. Looks like it was made in 1992 and looks nearly new. It's got a double bead, the choke is modified, and the barrel is stamped April 1992 which matches the 1992 serial number prefix. It's marked as a trap model.

I’m sorry about the family that lost the son. It was a nice thing to have the raffle. Congrats on the new shotgun.

What’s the name of the gun shop?

Jerry's Gun Shop and Pawn Shop in Ardmore, OK. They have a nice new to them shop cat too.

Didn't realize the 1100 is so easy to take apart. A semi-auto shot gun sounds complex. I am going to order seals and rings for the gas system. Looks original and not used much at all. Almost all of the bluing is on the mag tube still. Pictures when I can...

Any 1100 experts here?

An1100 with that Pachmayr Triple Magnum pad is among one of the softest recoiling 12 ga. shotguns made. Good O rings & keeping that area pretty clean should have the gun running smoothly.
I suggest avoiding Winchester Super Speed shells at all cost if they're still around. The Universials aren't much better.
If your interest continues with with Sporting Clays or Skeet, you may find that a more open choke than the Mod. might result in more broken birds. Another barrel in Skeet, Imp. Cyl, or Rem choke should help.

That's some damn pretty wood, haven't seen much nicer on some TC grades, which is a higher grade than yours .

It's apart now for cleaning. I have a dozen gas o-rings on order. As far as the barrel goes I am a little stumped. There's not another 30" mod. marked 1100 for sale or previously sold I can find, not even a barrel. I only see ones with Remchoke which was introduced before this gun was made. So why does it have a fixed choke barrel and why is it 30" modified when I can find no others? Receiver is marked "TRAP" with a light roll mark on the right side. I can get a Remchoke barrel for $350 new but that's extreme. I had no issues hitting clays with my cheap pump until my shoulder turned blue.

Nice Shotgun, great wood! Don’t feel bad at all about winning the raffle, most of the times the prizes are donated by the same type of good folks looking to help as the ones helping by purchasing the tickets!
I have helped spearhead some large benefits and most of the time when people find out what you are getting the item for they give it to you at cost or donate it. There are still great people out there!

Many of us have shot 1100's for trap and it was a staple of that sport. I was immediately thinking, "I hope he knows to carry extra O-rings". And a couple posts later, the OP mentioned he was getting some. :)
I also thought the wood looked like it was a TB or TC Trap grade. Then later I read it was marked TRAP.❤️

This was a great find.

I have volunteered on two 501(s)(3) boards that worked to benefit youth organizations and served as Sponsor Coordinator and/or PR Director for both so I got to see the good in some (usually) business owners ... local of course.

I don't know enough about these yet to know what TB or TC means. It simply says "TRAP" on the right side of the receiver and nothing else.

The left side says REMINGTON Model 1100 and displays the serial number that starts with an M, has six numbers, then ends with a V.

The barrel is lacking most billboard type messages. Has a proof mark or two including "REP", a two-digit date code "4-2" (April 1992?), is marked mod., and a star with "12 GA 2 3/4 in shells only". Other side of the barrel merely says "Remington Arms, Inc. Ilion, N.Y. Made in USA". No warnings or giant ugly things.

Front bead is white and larger than the silver mid-barrel bead. The big nut on the end of the mag tube that holds the forearm wood on is plum/copper colored. I found NO wear, NO burnt powder residue, No grease (but some light oil), and the dirtiest part was inside the mag tube as I am sure I am the first to remove the spring, plunger, and follower after popping the cap out. I bet it has less than 100 rounds through it.

ANY information you all can provide is appreciated. I love the stories and the trivia on these things as much as anything. Still trying to figure out why I have the only 30" vent rib modified 2-3/4" 12 gauge 1100 on the planet. I did find a 26" improved for $250-ish if the guy still has it but I need to fill in the blanks on what I have before I go spending more on it.

It's simply a trap barrel that was offered in modified & full. Most buyers of a dedicated trap gun would generally pick the full in the day, but things were changing. So, not so many of those seen. Not a long run for them anyway as the Rem choke was being trusted & used more & more.

Lots of skeet choked barrels mentioned there but I need to look a lot further to find out about TRAP stamped receivers and why mine has such a long modified barrel...and no Remchokes.

My bad for calling it a trap barrell when it doesn't say so on it. It's simply a visual & how equipped in the day. Vent rib & twin beads, an ivory colored Bradley type on the front with a small silver(colored) mid. Simple as that. Field barrels had a single silver colored bead up front. Trap marked receivers were equipped with the twin bead in Mod or full, before & during Rem choke barrels as the later was not accepted by the trap shooting crowd at first.
The gun appears to be a correct standard 1100 trap gun with sometimes seen prettier wood generally seen on the Trap-B or C guns. This one has an aftermarket pad installed & the only question is that was the length of pull corrected for it.

The stock does not look cut down. I could put an OEM plate back on if I knew which one to get. I have a slip on Limbsaver for function. It doesn't seem too long but I am far from knowledgeable on how to fit a shotgun.

I don't remember seeing a barrel marked TRAP and it's not uncommon to see a trap gun with modified or improved modified choke. I haven't done any of that for a long time but there was some push back from the old timers when screw in chokes came on the market. Many preferred to stick with the non-tubed barrels.

Trap and Skeet are entirely different games. For skeet a shorter barrel and open choke gets the job done way easier. The only advantage to the longer barrel is swing but then you have to reverse that inertia for a second bird. With Trap a longer barrel and tighter choke give you that extra time as the "birds" are heading away from you.

Fit is everything with a shotgun. If you have an experienced friend to go to the range with you do a round shooting instinctively without really focusing on the bead at all. Have him note where you are shooting( high, low, ahead or behind with directions r to l or l to r) without telling you. Don't even worry if you hit anything. Then you can shim your stock to where the gun shoots where you are pointing. If it fits it hits.

The course we shoot has both types of shooting combined. I am going to leave the barrel alone until I know how I do.

I did not introduce skeet into the discussion. I was wondering why my 1992 gun doesn't have Remchoke barrel and why is there no mod choke 30" 1100 trap models for sale or sold, gun or barrel anywhere if I have one.

Did I mis where you went back to the clays club with your new to you 1100? If you've been, how did it work out?

I have a Remington 870 Wingmaster and an 1100.
They both came with 30 inch barrels and have a fixed modified choke.
They are also both 3 inch magnums if that matters.

I have several other barrels for them , but that is what they came with.

As others have commented, that is stunning wood! I shot trap for many years, 1970 thru about 1998, and the Remington 870 and 1100 was very popular. With the recoil pad on your 1100 it should be a very soft shooting shotgun. I shot with an 1100 for awhile and then went to both Browning and Beretta single barrel shotguns and finally wound up with a Beretta 303 semi-auto.

I should have added "non-magnum" to the weirdness of my 1100. The only 1100s I have seen with a 30" vent rib modified fixed barrel were magnums. Mine is not.

I have not had it out but plan on shooting some flying soda cans on Thursday. I share Saturday schedule with the two others I'd go with so we need to plan a Sunday.

I have an 870 as well. Inherited from my paternal Grandfather who passed Father's Day 2003. It's a 20 gauge given to him by his underlings who amassed their own funds and bought it for him for his retirement as the Rains County Foreman of the Texas Highway Department in the early '70's. I have never shot it. It looks new. I got several boxes of full length brass shells too. Some are half brass and cardboard.

That's a nice looking 1100.

ATA rules prohibit the use of Magnum shells, which would explain why your trap gun is not chambered in 3".

Trap shooters like to "choke for smoke", so I'm not surprised that not too many 30" Mod barrel guns are out there.

As mentioned, general consensus is a more open choke would be better for sporting clays, but the setup you have now will still dust 'em on the trap line.

If you haven't do so, you should try trap. You can waltz into the and shoot a couple rounds of 25 targets and call it a day. Much easier on your shoulder!
