Windows 7 Support Ending

After 1/14/20 Microsoft will no longer support Windows 7. There will be no more technical support or security updates.

I did the free update right before Christmas. Worked quite well and only thing I'm missing is a file with some pictures. Don't think it's gone but I haven't found it so far.

We all know there is no such thing as a free lunch yet Microsoft has been giving out free updates to Win 10 for several years now.

There are over 800 millions devices now running on Win 10. A $7/mo subscription fee would bring in 65 billion dollars a year.

Yup, me too.
I have Windows 7 and will continue to use it.
I have an excellent anti-virus program and 4 other spam blockers, script blockers
yadda yadda yadda running on it.
I also have nothing of value on this computer.
A few website urls I go to and the audio and notation programs I use to play and write music
that are backed up elsewhere.
1/2 the time I'm on this computer I'm not even hooked up to the internet.
My wife has Windows 10 on her computer and I wouldn't use that can-of-worms
if they paid me.

Agree. The other option is to check your tower and see if you have an open slot
for another HD. If you do, I'd suggest getting another HD and loading it with Mint.
That way as you learn the differences, you can still boot from winderz any time you
like. Also Linux understands winderz file formats, where winderz does not
understand Linux formats. Thus if you have booted in Linux, you can still access all
of your winderz data.

If you are running a laptop, you will have to do more research to see what your
computer hardware will allow you to do. I recommend that you NOT go with a
dual boot HD. It's in setting up the dual boot that you are most likely to fat finger
something and have data go into the bit bucket.

P.S. Mint is another version of Ubuntu and is closest to winderz.

I converted on the day 0bummer was appointed and have not looked back since.

Windows 10 comes with Microsoft Defender, which is actually a pretty good anti virus program.

If MSFT started charging for operating systems, i wouldn’t mind paying IF it included something such as WORD or EXCEL.

I too have opted to stay with Win 7. I went to upgrade to Win 10, and they were charging $139.00! Screw them! If I change, I will just buy another computer at that price! I may even try Linux.

We have lots of PCs at work that need to be updated, I have a Windows 10 laptop at home but I only use it when I have to look up parts from home. For those of you with iPhones what I recommend is to get a budget iPad and a wireless printer, it’s all 99% of you will ever need.

I put Windows 7 pro on my laptop long ago to replace the Asinine "vista"; It's been up dated regualrly. Looked at window #10 and couldn't stand it.

I upgraded my Windoz 8.1 to 10 when it was still a free upgrade. Took some 'getting used to' but now I don't have any problems with it. Took a lot of "what does this thingee do?" but it is an OK system.

If these operating systems are so great why do they need to be updated weekly (weakly)?
As for Defender its written by the same people who wrote Windoze. And you expect that to protect your computer?
If Defender protects your computer so well why don't they write Windoze like Defender?

I still use xp at the farm. guess what? works fine.
7 is in all my towers and laptop. my tech loaded the 10 update 3 years ago into all my computers so I could have an option to change. haven't yet.
im slowly weening off the internet. soon ill be back to copper grid.
no one....repeat, no one calls me on email except spammers and crooks anyway.
is it me, but with smart phones...people are opting for talking to each other more than typing email or fingering texts? imagine that.

My tower was automatically upgrade to 10 from 7 a few years ago. I came home one day and saw it was 93% done so I let it finish. It's been OK so far. W7 worked fine.

Graygun, I suspect you have your update settings on automatic. Microsoft, over an extended period of time, was loading special software into your operating system. They were then able to automatically upgrade you to W10.

No...the recorders probably aren't made by the aircraft manufacturers .

No, I’m sorry, I honestly didn’t understand what you meant.

I’m also not understanding why people dislike Windows 10. They say it “sucks” but don’t explain why. I’ve used it since the free upgrades a few years back, on my second computer now with it, and haven’t had any problems with it. Same with my daughters laptop for school. In many ways, it seems more logical and organized than pervious versions. I think they were trying for a closer OS to Apple than in the past, trying to get people to either move from Apple to MSFT or just stay with Windows and not move to Apple at all.

But I do understand why people don’t want to upgrade, if you get used to something and it works for what you want, why change?

Like I said, I don’t have a problem with paying a monthly fee if it includes something, free cloud storage (or more anyway) or other programs like WORD, or is just more powerful.

Well, UPS has been sending me warnings that UPS World Ship will no longer work with Windows 7. I figured I would just wait it out but this morning UPS was non functional...2 hours later I'm up and running Windows 10. I have it on a laptop at home so I'm used to it, FWIW just use the Desktop View and it looks and functions just like 7.

If Windoze is vulnerable to hacks and security problems so it has to be updated how is Defender going to protect your computer? Its written by MicroSoft, the same folks who wrote Windows! How can Defender be any better?

I just updated one pc with win 8.1 to win 10 for free.
I just updated another pc with win 7 to win 10 for free.
I like windows defender and use it over any other such as Norton or McAfee - It has been working for years for free.

I have Windows 10 on my tablet and it seems to work OK.

Still have 7on my desktop because 10 no longer supports my film and flatbed scanners and my photo printer. Don't want to have to replace functioning hardware.

I do have automatic updates turned on. The updates prompt me so I can decide when to update. I can see in the lower corner if there are any waiting. I can choose to update now. If I wait for several days the updates will occur on their own. The number of days for the auto update show in the lower corner as a part of the update notification. The updates are worrisome. However staying patched up for the operating system and for software packages is standard security policy for most companies today as I understand.

Updates will be there for any operating system I believe. And you can buy more security protection than might be in the OS. There are many scanners that you can buy and even they will be patched frequently with current fixes for new security breaches. I use Windows Defender since it is free and works well. If windows 10 detects windows defender then it will not press you to get some scanning protection.

I used a forbes link that pointed me to a Microsoft link where I downloaded and then upgraded my version of windows for free.
