Dr. C.... your find fans memory of an Husqvarna commercial 1898 Mauser carbine in 7x57mm. Beautiful European walnut with Schnabel forend, perfectly curved pistol grip, 20-1/2" barrel. Fine accuracy, despite slow 1:12" twist; good enough for woodchucks. Hornady 139 Spire Point seated over 50.4/IMR 4350 in Winchester brass. Fixed with Leupold Vari-X II 2-7x scope in Beuhler mount/rings. Fast in the woods. As honest a smokeless cartridge as any and an all-time deer slayer. Although a small ring Mauser, with Model 70 style ejector slot under left locking lug, the Husqvarna is a finely machined very strong action. The Husqvarna Mauser also has the Winchester M70 magazine release, with engagement reinforced by recoil; simply the best mag catch of all.
(Note: the above load is not for pre-98 Mausers, nor any ancient 7x57, and was worked up the the Husqvarna only.)
