I am going to get a 77 RSI while I can find one...so which caliber do you think loses the least velocity in the short barrel? 7x57,270,308 or 30-06?
Which do you have and why did you get "that"one?
Thanks.

I think the answer to your velocity question is 308, but all are excellent calibers. If you want one of the new 7x57s you had better act fast as they may already be sold out. I have (for sale actually to finance my incoming 7x57) an RSI 30-06. I have never felt there was a problem with the velocity loss. I just needed an RSI in 7x57, so Lipsey's came through for me this year. Great gun in a great caliber. I personally would want a longer barrel on a 270, but that is just personal preference. If I could afford an RSI in every caliber they make I would get them all. To me it is the best looking rifle available.

Not to hijack your thread, but the International isn't on Ruger's website this year. Are they still producing cataloged M77 Internationals? Did I miss something?

Yes, 308 is probably the answer followed closely by the 7X57 for velocity loss minimization. Case capacity vs bore capacity just works out better for the shorter cartidges. Any that are out there will still offer good performance though. Get them while you can.

I had the 308 in the 77 CR and the performance was and is great. That being said, I would opt for the 7x57 just because it is my preference. I have that chambering in a #1RSI and the performance/accuracy is very good. Good luck on your choice!

Of the actual calibers listed, 7mm has the best BC for hunting bullet range. Effectively this just means the bullets are more aerodynamic and will lose less velocity than the others over the given range.

The .308 is already handicapped in comparison to the .30-06.

I would take the 7x57, its a classic cartridge in a classic rifle!

I got the 308 but would have preferred the 7X57. I went with the 308 because that's all that was available and I wanted to get the MKII version and not the matte'd up Hawkeye.

I had a choice between 30-06 and 308. After serious study I decided the short barrel was too short to get any kind of proper burn from all save the fastest powders - if that, and I chose the 308.

Ten years later I'm convinced that I made the correct choice.

Giver the array of choices you offer, I'd again choose the 308 without hesitation.

Good question!

I don't necessarily think any of the cartridges on that list has an advantage over the others when it comes to velocity loss in short barrels or gains in longer barrels.

They are all very much in the same class.

I think it has more to do with what a particular barrel likes or dislikes, the same way it does with accuracy.

Some loads will lose/gain more per inch than others in a particular gun.
You just have to find what yours likes.

I chose the 7X57 because I've never owned one, and that's just wrong, plus I think it's a good fit with the style of these rifles.
It should be here in about a month.

Lipsey's did a special run of 6.5x55 SS RSIs last year. Good luck getting one of the 250 that are out there though.

GOT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

My dealer called Lipsey's this afternoon and they had 7 left of the Shot Show special run of 77 RSI's in 7x57. They now have 6! One will be coming my way!

If you want one of these, speak now or wish forever. Only 6 left as of 3:30 this afternoon.

Thanks for all the comments above.

Nice! Way to make that call! Mine will arrive on Wednesday and I really am excited. 7x57 is the way to go.

I emailed with Jason at Lipsey's today to thank him for working with Ruger on some really nice products. He said the 7x57 RSIs have sold faster than any of their other special runs.

I've have a MKII RSI in 308, its a nice handling and extremely well shooting with a 165 grain bullet on top of a decent load of IMR 4064. I love 7mm calibers, and the classic 7X57 will be a keeper I'm sure, and just a little jealous.

I saw 3 at the Greensboro,NC gun show this weekend...if you call Ed's Gun Shop in Vass, NC, he had one when I left today about 2....have no connection with them except I have bought a few guns from Ed over the years and he seems to be reputable. Good luck.
