Interesting read. I never would have thought I'd see the 25-06 beat out the classic 300 H&H when it came to opinions. I guess that is why it is a "cult" caliber. Of course the H&H only shines in one rifle... Pre-64 Super grade.

A month ago, I would have never believed it. Although make no bones about it, I still do want a medium sporter in 300 H&H. It will just have to wait awhile longer.

Brian, just to toss my coins in...

I'd look for a .280 or a 7mm Mag for distance, a 375 H&H for a beauty of a gun and big thump. That might preclude the 35 Whelen, though you could make a case for 25-06/280/35 Whelen as they're all 30-06 based cartridges.

If you like shooting one, you'll like them all.

For me, it's more a Mauser thing. 257 Robt/6.5 Swede/7mm Mauser are what wind my watch. Now that there's a 1A in .257... I may have to become a 1 SIG household to fund a purchase.

Anyone know of a trustworthy smith to do a trigger job on a #1 within an hour or so of Oklahoma City? I have found out the hard way that not all gunsmiths should be gunsmiths, so I do not deal with anyone without good recommendations.

Your post office. I've had far, far too many BAD experiences with people hanging a gunsmith shingle outside their door in and around OKC to ever waste an hour or even a minute of my precious time driving to or from their place of business and placing my hard earned investment in their less-than-capable hands for God-knows-what adverse outcome. This includes people who are "recommended."

A nationally KNOWN gunsmith won't cost you a nickel more to hire for any possible gunsmithing job than any of the local yokels in OKC would charge. I would box the rifle up and send it to someone like Mark Penrod or Simmons Gun Repair. You'll have your rifle delivered back into your hot little hands within about a month of sending. There are far too many gunsmithing concerns with KNOWN reputations for me to ever gamble on anything local. That may not be the answer you want to hear, but that's the reality.
