I've seen this "trick" before of building homegrown "explosive" ammo....Makes me a little antsy, altho I 'spose it's fairly safe as long as it's not used in a tube magazine with spitzer bullets!!..... :roll:

The cavity that the primer is in looks significantly wider than the other nearby bullets. How do you suppose the person forced that thing in there without it going off?

I'll betcha they drilled out the bullet, seated the primer by hand, then crimped the lead just a bit over the primer. I'm not quite sure how that final crimp would be done. Interesting.

I had a friend that used to do this to some of his reloads. He found that whatever .44 lead hollow point bullet he was using for his .44 Mag reloads, the cavity was perfectly sized for a small pistol primer. He would carefully put some powder into the cavity, then carefully glue the primer over the powder. Made a pretty impressive flash when it hit the far side of the stripper cut we used to shoot in but scared the crap out of me. Of course, this is also the same friend that used to brag that his .44 Mag reloads consisted of dragging the case through a pan of powder, brushing it off flush with the case mouth, then seating the bullet. When he shot his S&W 629 loose shortly after he got it and had to send it back to S&W, he quit doing things like this and now is pretty normal. Well, his reloads are pretty normal, anyway!

Has anyone noticed that by putting that primer into the HP they have violated federal law by technically creating an explosive device? :shock: The BATFE frowns very severely on such shenanigans. With then boys, it makes no difference whether you made it or not, it's in your possession.
You must always remember, the BATFE don't cheat fair and are not above railroading innocent people.

I have a box of commercially manufactured "Exploder" ammo from 1978 or so. Made and marketed by Bingham Ltd. of Atlanta, Ga. Nothing special about handling them, they were loaded in revolver calibers only, as far as I know. The only box I have is 38 Special jacketed hollow point with a primer in the HP. Doesn't state what the bullet weight is and I've never cared enough to pull one apart to weigh it. The cases are nickel plated Super Vel.
My considered opinion is that it is nothing to get excited about, then or now.
