What's this?

It's growing only on one type of tree in a very small area.
It's hard and brittle, crushes to almost powder. I think it's the dead exterior of some sort of fungus. Anyone know?

It looks to be a dried-out "hen of the woods" mushroom, delicious when limber/fresh.

Grifola frondosa is a polypore mushroom (fungi) that grows in clusters at the base of trees, particularly oaks, and is commonly known among English speakers variously as "hen of the woods", "hen-of-the-woods", "ram's head" and "sheep's head", typically found in late summer to early autumn.

It can be deadly to eat, if it grew off a coniferous tree ILO a hardwood tree, like oak.

Interesting. The first shot was at the base of the tree. This one is right out of the side of the tree about 6' up.
