I'm so confused. On eBay and Amazon are kits from $17.99 up to $150. I want a multipurpose kit for rifles and handguns. So many choices, and I have no idea what is good. I've never used one before. Thanks for any suggestions. Mike

I have owned a few different kits over the years. One thing I can say,, ALL of them only get you "close" but not perfect. You will have to shoot your gun, with your ammo, to do the final adjustments.

I have an older(at least 10-15 years old) low priced Bushnell(?) that does OK. The more expensive units will have a better/stronger laser and most likely more precise bore spuds. Mine uses little plastic bushings that can be forced onto a tapered shank giving a full range of caliber use 22-50. Neither super precise or convenient but it works.
I use it mostly for AR platform guns since those aren't conducive to pulling the bolt and looking down the bore to get a coarse alignment. Since I now have a nearly unlimited supply of large cardboard boxes, I hardly ever even bother with the bore siter anymore. A 3' x 3' cardboard @ 25 yards for the first 2-3 shots works fine.

Set up a bench to stabilize what ever you are shooting, and put a few down range.
Adjust as necessary, and try again. - - - I've seen multiple guns have the shots
"close" in just a half dozen rounds. By then, you are doing the same thing as you
would (fine tuning it) without a "kit" to get you on paper (all you can expect from
a "bore sighting kit").

I've used this 'older model' with the 3 ADJUSTABLE arbors for many decades. As mentioned above, don't get too anal about which one to buy, they're only supposed to get you 'on paper'. Bushnell 743333 Boresighter $86.89

In my business I use a Site Lite SL-500 kit to do the boresighting. Comes with different arbors and o-rings for a snug fit from 22 to 50 cal. The end that contacts the muzzle is tapered and magnetic for a good center of bore fit. Also, it is a green laser which makes it nice when sighting in something with a red dot or red laser. It's not cheap but really works good.
