What are the 2 or 3 best slings on the market?

I'd like to get a really nice sling for my new M1A Scout and was hoping you guys could tell me he top 2 or 3 brands for rifle slings.

In my opinion, if you're actually going to use it for carrying the rifle and for supported shooting stances while hunting, the Montana Sling by Sinclair is the best one around. I've been replacing all of my Latigo slings with them.

The Latigo would still be my number 2 choice, but it is a very distant second place at this point.

I've still never found a sling I like any better than the old USGI green cotton web ones. These used to be available new at gun shows for just a couple bucks. Now used, nearly worn out ones will run you six bucks. Commercial repros are available that are almost--but not quite--as good. New gennie GI ones will run you $15 or more. (Still pretty cheap I guess, unless you're used to paying $2 or $3 for them.)

Depends on what you want a sling for....

If it's just a carry strap, one of the "Hunter" brand straps with the rough suede patch works very well at a reasonable price.

If you're looking for a true target sling, a leather military 1903 type is the only way to go:

I've never used the Latigo sling, but the Montana is my favorite sling of all time. I have at least a dozen of them at this point and they are all I use on my hunting rifles. At about $30 from Midway they are a great value, solid bridle leather and made in the USA (not MT though...) They don't use any buckles or metal other than the included Uncle Mike's swivels. They adjust instantly and keep a good hold and they look great!

On rifles & shotguns under about 9#, I like a latigo carry strap like the ones that came on Remingtons, or from Marlin or Hunter. I set the length for a hasty sling-works for me hunting. If you get serious about the target work, get a leather military type in the 1 1/4" width. You can comfortably lock the rifle down for position shooting. good luck, Jack

Butler Creek Mountain Sling is the hands-down winner, IMO.

QD swivels at the end and in the loop. Loop is quick-adjustable for length using the plastic H-buckle. Inside of sling is lined with non-slip material in the shoulder area. Excellent performer, great value.

For a general purpose hunting type sling at a good price it's hard to beat the Sinclair Montana sling. My favorite is the Brownell's latigo sling, but it's a little pricey.

I make all my own, but in general, whatever you get...get two.

For years I've used two for a "biathon" carry while I'm skiing but commonly use them on long hikes into hunting areas and of course the slings can be used singly as well.

I made an adapter for the forestock. The butt is best modified with simple addition of a stud on the side, placed so as not to touch the face when shooting. Then the rifle lies flat on your back when carrying there.

Quake Industries makes a sling called the Claw that is awesome. It adjusts easily and quickly and that sucker will flat ride and stay on your shoulder! I don't care for the swivels that comes with the sling and have changed mine out to the really excellent Butler Creek sling swivels.

I like those ugly wide (3 inch) molded rubber slings with nylon straps molded into and through them.

They are cheap and don't slide off your shoulder. For shooting targets a 1.25 wide leather hook type sling with a hand stop is good.

Back then, while in basic training the DI, told us that the issue green cotton web type slings could be used to tie up a prisoner.

whatever the sling of choice,add a custom two cartridge holder-mine is a simple affair with velcro/flap.
