Westernfield Model 59a scope / mount question

I have a neighbor that has a Westernfield Model 59A 22lr rifle.

He has asked if I could find a scope and mounts for it.

I told him, and now you guys, that I am not up on scopes and mounts but will try and point him in the right direction.

I see it has holes drilled off to the left side of the receiver. They are tapped.

I assume it needs a side mount scope mount.

I checked with some of the scope makers and looked in their mount selector section but cannot find the Westernfield 59A.

I read on various links from my search it is supposedly the same as either a Savage 6a or possibly a Stevens something. I think

I did find a side mount on Midway

but as I said above, I am not sure about scopes & rings and bases.

Would something like this work on that rifle? Are they fairly universal for side mounts?

He wants to keep it and put a scope on it for varmints. His grandpa gave it to him.

I'm not familiar with that rifle, but it probably is drilled and tapped for a scope mount that looks like this:

Perhaps an off-brand made by Savage or Springfield, or perhaps Mossberg? Savage or Springfield 87 seems to come up with a cross reference to the Westernfield 59a.

At any rate, the side mount scope for the round .22 rifle receivers were pretty common for the vintage .22s which did not come with grooved slots on top of receivers (for scope rings). Back in the day they were steel, but looks like they are aluminum now.

I guess I have it figured out.

I went by the link cellar gave and found something that matches it on Midway's site.

The mount holes are 1 5/8 apart like the gun is so I just showed the neighbor that and a few scopes available and told him to order the stuff himself....and that there is NO guarantee by me that it will be 100% right.

I hate when you try and do a favor and it ends up biting you in the rear

yooper 1, The Westernfield 59A was made by Savage/Stevens and marketed by Montgomery Ward. It is essentially the same gun as a Savage Model 6 or Stevens model 87 with a cheaper configuration. Those two holes drilled and tapped on the side of the receiver were for a Lyman or similar side mount "rear" sight and not for scope mounts. They can be adapted for a side scope mount but the proper mounts for a 59A are Weaver # 12 both front and rear and the receiver must be tapped and drilled for them. The majority of these inexpensive .22 rimfires were not tapped and drilled by the factory to keep costs down. I just tapped and drilled a Stevens Model 15 this week for a buddy. He had bought a cheap 7/8" BSA .22 scope and I mounted that and shot it in this morning. It is a nice little combination. Wally World has Tasco 3 to 7 variable 7/8" .22 scopes with the rings for $17.00. These are essentially the same as the BSA scope. If he goes this route, he would have to use a 3/8" base mount instead of the Weaver # 12. At any rate, if he is not proficient enough to drill and tap the receiver "properly" himself, then he should take it to a local "competent" gunsmith to get this work done. In drilling and tapping, you only get "ONE" chance to do it right! Everything has to be straight and level in order to get the base mounts properly oriented to the bore!...................Dick :wink:
