Wantin' a .22 revolver.............

Got a little excess money, wantin' a small .22 Revolver.

New Ruger Bearcat runs $409, no Tennessee Sales Tax, but not wantin' to put out that much. Found an old Ruger Three Screw Single Six, 5 1/2" barrel, fairly rough aluminum parts, not priced yet. Thinking about $150, cut the barrel back to 4 5/8" for maybe $70, replacing the worn aluminum. Then found out its been converted, don't have all the parts I need to put it back.

There's another, 6 1/2" in very good condition, shot very little, again, not yet priced, and original action. Somehow, I'm reluctant to chop the barrel on this one, if the price were to be right.

Bass Pro has a Uberti Stallion for $299 plus tax, also 5 1/2" barrel.

Wanting to look at a North American Arms top-break, haven't seen one yet.

Turning all this over in my mind. Thoughts, please?

This guy has two old model single sixes, not converted. One has a mag cylinder only. Not collectors, but shooters.

As far as I know, the NAA top-break was a limited run, and they're pretty scarce. I also think they've been bringing top $$$, when you do find one.

I've heard good things about the Uberti, but have not shot one personally.

Since you said you want a small .22 revolver, I think the Bearcat's your gun. The size difference between a Bearcat and a Single-Six is pretty apparent when you've got them side by side.

FWIW, there's nothing "wrong" with a converted Old Model, if you're just looking for a shooter on the cheap. If I read it right, that gun is going for $150??? I'd grab that in a heartbeat, and shoot the dickens out of it. As much as I like short barrels, I'd be able to overlook that extra inch of barrel to get a Single-Six for $150... 8)

There's an unconverted Bearcat on our Classifieds right now at $350 shipped. There are more, if a guy does a search.

Since shipping and FFL fees tend to eat up the savings on all those great deals we find on the forums or auction sites, you might end up needing to save just a little more to get what you "really" want, locally.

I have a Cimarron Model P Jr. 22 and I highly recommend it - but price will probably be around that NM Bearcat in your original post.

For what you're looking at my first choice would be that Ruger single six - if you can get it for that $150 or even $200 and buy some part to convert it back you're good to go for a good price. Next would be the Uberti (assuming it's somewhat similar to the Cimarron Model P). If you want a bare bones plinker/shooter, I read good things about the Cimarron Plinkerton (I think Jeff Quinn did a review in Gunblast), but it's going to be plain Jane compared to Uberti (but around half the cost - I think you can get them for $180??).

Nice problem to have, looking for a gun - enjoy the search!

I have a couple of High Standard double actions. Go bang every time, hold 9 rounds, generally $200 and under. Hard to beat.

You can't beat a used New Model Single Six with short barrel if you can find one. Or if your idea of "small" isn't THAT small, you can certainly find 5 1/2" or 61/2" NMSSs for very reasonable prices. But if you really MEAN small, save up for a 'Cat. Nothing else really compares.

Good luck on the NAA Ranger Break Top. I sold mine on gunbroker a couple months ago for $1350, plus $40 for shipping.

If you want a super cool rimfire revolver, then buy yourself one of the TALO Ruger Single Six birdshead "Blackbirds". They are 22lr/22wmr convertables, and have 3 3/4" barrels, polished stainless finish, and black birdshead grips. Acrylictnk (on this forum) is selling them, and only 650 were made. I think they will run you about $520. Worth every penny. I have one from the original run of 450 (with white grips), and it's definitely one of my favorites.

I really like the Bearcat and a pocket full of 22 CB shorts. They don't even bother my tinnitus when I shoot without ear plugs (much). It's just one of those guns that I love to carry when woods walking. Mine is a decent shooter and will hold minute of clay bird at 30 steps if I do my part.

When in doubt, go with the Bearcat.

I agree with the Bearcat. Perfect little 22. I picked up my last one for $270 shipped, and it was a 1967 unconverted.

The little NAA Break Top had a first build of 500 i think, they offered lots of them to the members on that forum first as is custom for NAA. Even after a good magazine articles NAA decided to stop building it as it would never be cost effective for them. I am a member of that site and some of the members are saying the last time I checked is they are now $1500.00 or more. The replacement was called The Sherrif or Lawman and has some great followers. Just wanted to let you know. scroll down and see info on the "not in production"

I'd go with a Bearcat over a Single-Six. About a third smaller, and a pound lighter. If you want a fun gun, it's a great choice, and used ones aren't too pricey if they don't fit one of the "collector" categories. A used "New Bearcat" would be a little less headache than an OM as a regular shooter. Already has transfer bar, current parts and grips fit.

The Plinkerton is almost all pot metal. Guy posted on TFL that his was showing severe signs of erosion around the chambers and severe peening on the breechface. I wouldn't take a free one.

If you can shop around, you should be able to find a nice slightly used Bearcat for under 300. The size and handeling sets them apart. I love mine, and the only reason I have the single six is for the magnum cylinder. Good luck, jack

As to a new Bearcat, well, doggone it, I've got that much, and a little more, but just want to agonize a bit more, and get something a little less. The Uberti seems awfully tempting. And as to the converted Three Screw Single Six, that just goes against my grain.

I can't explain it rationally, but I'd rather have a New Model than a converted Three-Screw. Makes no sense I know, but that's my warpwed thinking.

As to small a 4 5/8" Single Six fits the bill for me, but still, a Bearcat................

And, I'm not desperate for a .22, have a fine old Three Screw Single Six, and a beauty of a .22/45

I saw one of the NAA top breaks for sale locally for $1,000 and I thought the guy had lost his mind. Didn't realize they were bringing such big money.
If you want to get by cheap find an old High Standard Sentinel for around $200. I've had one for years. It's my fishing gun. (to shoot snakes, not fish)

You may laugh at this but I bought a Heritage Birdshead model with long rifle and mag cylinders for $200 new in the box. Goofy safety but other than that this thing shoots like a dream at 30 to 40 feet. Mine is very accurate at that distance, at least for the sights and my old eyes. Minute of rabbit every shot. I like it but would prefer a Ruger of course. Just a thought!
