My brother and I were talking about going back to the NRA Whittington Center at Raton New Mexico again in May. Last year we had my 89yr old dad and some of his friends there.
I was thinking maybe if I threw this out early enough I might interest some Ruger Forum members to be out there at the same time. One thing we did was each of us set up our personal rifle and some ammo on the bench, then we all did a 5 shot rotation on everyone else rifles shooting one shot each at one chicken, one pig, one turkey and one ram and one on the Buffalo at a little over 1000yd. Keep score and at the end of the round, best scores have a shootoff, winner gets his dinner paid for or whatever, we might all throw in for a gift store credit at the range pro shop there in the visitor center or other prizes.
We could do the same for handgun silhouette or other shooting games depending on how many folks we could have assembled.
Talk it over. The new shotgun range complex is world class, we could have one heck of a fun trap or sporting clays shoot.
Cost include a $25 Whittington club membership and your lodging in competitor housing, cabins or RV park or campgrounds which are nice and pretty reasonable. Fees and more info about Whittington are on the range website.
I have been going there for many years now as often as I can. If you are a NRA member, you owe it to yourself to see how the money has been spent and enjoy that wonderful facility.

I've been there a few times but don't know about this May. I'll be around Angel Fire and Taos next month.

We are there every first full week in June and will be until we both croak. We were married on the firing line at Whittington June 7, 2001.
And so it goes...

Which range is your favorite?
I am partial to the Rifle silhouette because it is dang fun with old rifles, but I walked Jeff Cooper's scout rifle course, fun with the Garand.

Most fun I had had there not shooting was spotting for a Black Powder Cartridge rifle match, long range ballistics class 101

WE'RE mostly bigbore sixgunners so we like to shoot on the field pistol sillywet course with sixguns [ or pistol caliber carbines..] and with rifles we shoot at all the rocks up on the mountains behind the field pistol course.
And so it goes...

My hunting partner and I usually shoot there the day before our annual elk hunt on the Vermejo. My favorite target is the prairie dog pop up and some of the other metal targets once the sights have been checked out for the rifles planned for the hunt. If there was more to do up there I wouldn't mind living there so I could use that range year round but the better half come out with a solid, "HELL NO!" on that idea. :( Anyway it'd be one long drive to ABQ just to get components.
